Mets Nearly Snatch Defeat From Victory

Call Gothamist crazy, but is anything ever easy for the Mets? In last night's game against the Reds, they were up 6-0 with 2 outs in the 8th inning and promptly gave up 5 runs to the Reds. Lucky for the Mets, they got an insurance run in the 9th because Adam Dunn hit a solo home run with two-outs in the home half of the 9th. The Mets won the game 7-6 (box score) despite their best efforts to lose the game.

Al Leiter started the game and had another great outing. Since returning from the disabled list on June 1st, Leiter is 3-0 with a 1.70 ERA. His ERA of 2.12 is 2/3 of an inning short of qualifying him for the Major League lead. Instead, the best ERA in the majors belongs to teammate Tom Glavine, who picked up the tough-luck loss yesterday.

Unlike last week, where the Mets backed into the Subway Series, they picked up a series win against a better team. There were some issues of run support and mistakes in the field, but Met fans know that is a typical game. Hopefully for them, the Subway Series will be atypical.
