Bed-Stuy Show House

380 lewis.jpgLooking for something to do this long holiday weekend? If you're as obsessed about architecture as Gothamist, you might want to check out the Fourth Annual Bridge Street Development Corporation (BSDC) Show House.

Located at 380 Lewis Avenue, this 112 year-old brownstone was suffering from a half-century of neglect, until it was renovated last year. What sets 380 Lewis apart from previous BSDC Show Houses (also renovated brownstones) is its subdivision into condominiums, presenting a possibility for home-buyers unable to purchase/maintain such a large property.

After a 12-month restoration process, teams of interior designers, most of whom are based in Brooklyn, finished-out several of the condos. The designers took their inspiration from the four Bedford-Stuyvesant personalities honored at the June 17th ribbon-cutting and reception: rapper Jay-Z, New York Knicks head coach Lenny Wilkens, entertainment attorney L. Londell McMillan and retired Tuskegee Airman John Mulzac.

Designers were also required to create rooms within the budget of a typical home-buyer, keeping in line with the BSDC's commitment to affordable housing. When the Show House concludes, the apartments are to be sold to low- and moderate-income families, as the project is intended to revitalize the housing stock without pricing neighborhood residents out. Gothamist is concerned this might be a tricky equilibrium to maintain long-term, especially when some are speculating Bed-Stuy may be the new It-Neighborhood.

You can tour 380 Lewis (between Macon and MacDonough Streets) for $15, which will benefit BSDC and its programs to help neighborhood residents acquire affordable, appreciating housing. The Show House is open Thursdays through Sundays until July 11. For additional information, call 718-573-6893.
