AFI's Top 100 Movie Songs

David Hinckley in the NY Daily News complains that the American Film Institute list of the 100 Top Movie Songs is no fun because it's actually not a bad list. Gothamist would almost agree, except for the lack of songs from South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut. We feel that Come What May from Moulin Rouge (who sings that? who cares?) is just an addition to please the public (that way you can get Nicole Kidman on the show), but let's be honest here: No one is humming "I will love you until my daying day," but they are singing, "Kyle's Mom is a Big Fat Bitch" or "What Would Brian Boitano Do" or "Unclef*cker" or "Blame Canada." So, lists like this are still very crack-like because they are addictive, but they can be very bad too.

NY movies (perhaps not filmed here, but definitely NY-themed) whose songs made it on the list: Shaft (Theme song), On The Town (New York, New York), Annie Hall (Seems Like Old Times), Working Girl (Let the River Run), Saturday Night Fever (Stayin' Alive), The Way We Were (The Way We Were), West Side Story (Tonight; America), Breakfast at Tiffany's (Moon River), Midnight Cowboy (Everybody's Talking), New York, New York (Theme song), Do the Right Thing (Fight the Power), When Harry Met Sally (It Had To Be You), Arthur (Arthur's theme/ Best You Can Do), 42nd Street (42nd Street). Hey...where's Get Into the Groove? And a movie musical (kinda) to look forward to is De-Lovely, which will feature modern singers belting out Cole Porter tunes (and Gothamist would like to say once again, damn, does Robbie Williams look old - he looks about 10-15 older than he really is).

robbie williams is looking older, but i must say that he is still definitely hot. hott, even.

how dare you trash "Moulin Rouge"? best movie of 2001! and "Come What May" is just plain brills, so emotional, so perfect, such a great choice for the Top 100!

I can't watch Moulin Rouge without being bored or needing Dramamine, so what do I know?

Drew mentions that Aimee Mann's not on the list, and that's a good call - you'd think even the AFI would fall for the sing along "Save Me." If only it went top 40.

some random favorite movie song moments that didn't make the list:

- sarah bolger singing "Desperado" (In America)

- Delibes' much overused Flower Duet very nicely put to use in Patricia Rozema's I've Heard the Mermaid's Singing

- Strauss' Four Last Songs in The Year of Living Dangerously

- Will Farrell/Zooey Deschanel baby it's cold outside duet (Elf) - the fact that farrell isn't a professional singer adds to the moment

- steve martin/bernadette peters tonight you belong to me duet (the jerk)

- duet from marriage of figaro (shawshank redemption) when tim robbins plays it over the PA system

- meryl streep singing amazing grace at end of silkwood

- whoever did the cover of brazil in terry gilliam's brazil

Don't go see "De-Lovely." It's TERRIBLE.

I agree with gothamist, the best songs in film came from SP:BLU. Who can forget such hits as "Shut Your Fucking Face Uncle Fucker", "Its Easy Mmkay", and "Kyle's Mom Is a Big Fat Bitch"

Hands down the best EVER.

I went to Aimee Mann's show last night and she mentioned that "Save Me" was nominated for an Oscar, only to lose to Phil Collins' "crazy monkey man love song" ("You'll Be In My Heart" from Tarzan.) Suffice it to say, I think "Save Me" and "Kyle's Mom is a Big Fat Bitch" will both stand the test of time far better than Collins' song.

I had no idea that AFI was made up entirely of old queens and 50 something shut-ins with dish network. They should rename it the "All of our favorite show tunes and some other seemingly random crap"

uh, somebody messed up and forgot to add GHOSTBUSTERS. i mean come on: who you gonna call?!

was shocked by the ommission of To Sir, With Love and was selfishly hoping Ready to Take a Chance Again from Foul Play would find its way.
and why no Somewhere Out There?

All you have to do is start your own self-congratulatory organization and make a list, find a network and some pr hacks to perform orally where necessary

Michelle Pfeifer in the Fabulous Baker Boys was left out too. And Eleanor Powell dancing to Facsinatin' Rythym!
