Yesterday, police tried to subdue a 24 year-old man with a gun on the Brooklyn Bridge, but he shot himself in the chest. The Daily News has extensive coverage of the incident, complete with photographs (including a dramatic one above), saying that the man fired 2 shots in the air around 10AM. Police came from 1 Police Plaza and yelled, "Get down!" while a NYPD helicopter flew overhead. The man, a Mexican immigrant, never pointed the gun at police, and simply turned it on himself. He was taken to NYU Downtown Hospital where he died. Tourists Steve Ellens and Diana Lucar-Ellens of Grand Rapids, WI, on a visit to their daughter in the Village, were on the scene and gave the local newspapers some quotes, like "That's the first time I saw a person get shot," "We were just getting used to the city, thinking it's not so bad — and then this!" and "I just called our daughter to tell her what happened. She said, 'Oh, Mom, that's normal for New York.'" The Mayor's office and NYCVisit are probably going into conniptions, especially given perceptions of late.
The Post ends its article about the suicide with "Suicides on the Brooklyn Bridge are nothing new, but most people who decide to end their lives on the city landmark do so by taking a plunge into the East River."

Last we looked, Grand Rapids was still in Michigan.
I like how it appears that people are just moving about normally in the background while police are standing with GUNS DRAWN in the foreground. Nice.
There are Grand Rapids in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ohio as well as Michigan. The Apple Butter festival in Grand Rapids, Ohio every fall is quite enjoyable.
Cant people commit suicide in thier own suicide commiting neighborhoods? This is quite shocking for all of us innocent non suicide commiting bystanders.
I love how he goes to a BRIDGE to SHOOT HIMSELF. Dumbass.
I can vouch for the entertainment value of the above-mentioned apple butter festival. I certainly do love me some apple butter! And maple syrup!
If the guy fired some shots into the air, then the cops came, then they pointed their guns at him, then he "got down," as per the picture, then how long have those people been watching?
How about that lady in the "mom jeans" taking in the view? "Um, ma'am, there are firearms pointing at you."
This is not suicide via Brooklyn Bridge. This is suicide by cop. A very common phenomenom. Whenever you hear about someone with a gun or something going nuts and daring the cops to shoot them, 9 times out of 10 they want to get shot so they can die in a suicide by cop fantasy they have.
and this isn't suicide by cop, either. The guy wasn't killed by the cops, nor was his gun ever pointed at the cops so as to get them to fire on him. This is just an attention-craving suicide: the guy's actions say "I'll show them all. I'll do it on the bridge, be on TV, on the front page of the NY Post, etc. Someone will finally notice me, and then they'll all be sorry." Just his bad luck that the Post finally shows some restraint and doesn't run his story on the front page that day...
...and I think the NY Post decided to lead with a quality story (well, quality for the NY Post) about the two-headed Raymond Burr baby - love child.
This is for the ignorant person who said, " Can't people commit suicide in their own suicide commiting neighborhoods & leave his noncommitting suicide neighborhoods alone?" There are no suicide or non-suicide committing neighborhoods. For your information, all neiborhoods, cities, states and countries have suicides every day. Statistics show that in the U.S. alone every 18 minutes a person dies by suicide and every 19 minutes the whole family is left to deal with it. My father passed away from suicide just 2 years ago in October and life will never be the same. People like you put such stigma on the word suicide like you want to cover up that it happens, but it happens more than you realize it. And until people like you come to grips that it does happen then it will be harder and harder for society to talk about it and prevent it. I will hate it for you people who talk about suicide like it's something that other people do, and then you have a friend or family member that does it and your whole life changes in a minute.
