News that Elisabeth Rohm, Assistant D.A. Serena Southerlyn on Law & Order, will probably leave the show after the first 13 episodes in the 2004-2005 seasons is a relief. Sure, it makes the show seem unstable, what with the departure of Jerry Orbach and introduction of Dennis Farina's world weary cop this fall, but, in Gothamist's own opinion, Southerlyn has been personalityless and, frankly, a pain in the ass. The best A.D.A's have been Richard Brooks, Carey Lowell, and, yes, even Angie Harmon, for having strongly etched personalities that could shine through, especially since the show rarely dwells on their personal lives. L&O producer Dick Wolf says, "Lis has done a terrific job...and she has been a consummate professional...[But] we knew she had other career interests and opportunities." Rohm herself says, "Sam Waterston has been a great teacher and friend who has taught me about taking risks, and it is time to put that knowledge into action." Yes, like filming Miss Congeniality 2. You go, girl! Anyway, though Rohm has improved since starting on the show in 2001, she puts the ill in shrill; Gothamist is more impressed by how good her hair has been looking. Now, we can spend a few months thinking about how she'll leave. In a body bag, like Jill Hennessy, or abruptly and almost gleefully, like Harmon? Or, how about an alien abduction? That'd be a sweeps event.
And we're psyched that Jesse L. Martin is looking to sign on for a few more seasons. He's now going to be the longest running "young, good-looking detective" in the formula.

Interestingly, I think that Jill didn't die but rather ended up with the old 'head injury' and was in a clinic upstate...
I see an opportunity for a fresh young actress:

Maybe when they get around to dramatizing her shooting, she can be the ADA on the case.
body bag! body bag!
Aw, come on. Claire was the best ADA, and Angie Harmon's acting skills are only marginally better than Rohm's. And, hey Tien! Were you quoting the Effigies (Chicago, 80s, punk rock) song, whose chorus consists of "Body bag! Body bag!"? Interesting tie-in -- their frontman, John Kezdy, is now a prosecutor in Illinois (and a Federalist Society Republican).
man, I just want stone and ADA robinette back.
thank g-d!
she was really great in the middle seasons on angel, playing of all things a world weary cop.
Oudemia, if anything it was inadvertent. it was more of chant. kind of like the ads for autoland which go "auto land!" but with the 1-800 thing.
If memory serves, Jill wasn't in a body bag, she was just a 'vegetable' in an upstate facility who was dealing with bad 'head injuries'... You must double check with BK on this...
Reportedly, when Dino DeLaurentis' son brought in Meryl Streep to try to interest his father in doing a high brow movie with Streep, the elder DeLaurenteis looked up briefly from working at his desk and said:
"She's not even pretty, why do you waste my time", in Italian (Meryl Streep speaks Italian)
With respect to Elisabeth Rohm, I would say
"She's pretty, she's talented and she doesn't make me want to puke".
There is one ADA on one Law and Order whose teeth look like fake pearls or something, they don't look like teeth.
I think she died later - at least according to recap. And Dick Wolf and Jerry Orbach referred to her being dead at the Times Talk.
Rohm does win, hands down, for 'most glammed-up' ADA. What with the new haircut and everything, she's been smokin'.
Hands down Carey Lowell has been the best ADA on L&O. Though Rohm isn't that bad -- she's a lot better than that blonde one who was on SVU.
In retrospect, Carey Lowell's Jamie Ross definitely could go head-to-head with Jill Hennessey's Claire Kincaid. But, Claire being dead, and Jamie Ross likely to pop up as a judge in L&O 4, those ain't gonna happen.
I'd like to see someone a little more, shall we say, ethnic, in the role. Poor Robinette: He was excellent and got shafted.
I'm glad she is gone, but I'm worried who they'll bring. Just a thought, but why does the role demand a woman?
Because Jack McCoy is contractually obligated to hit it with his ADA.
It's also a ratings thing. IIRC, L&O was on its way to being cancelled b/c it wasn't attracting a wide enough demographic. After they brought on women castmembers, the show began to do better.
How about Parker Posey as an activist ADA?
Or Jennifer Jason Leigh--her career is in the toilet anyway. Just don't let her bring back that awful clipped accent she used when she was in the Hudsucker Proxy or when she played Dorothy Parker...
Hooray! The vacant ADA departs! She always looks like she's trying really hard to recite the lines earnestly, even though she doesn't understand them. It's like watching Dubya speak. But if you want to talk about great L&O ADAs, I think it's only fair to look to SVU's Stephanie March (and her dramatic faked-death departure). I think the mob should have something to do with Rohm's disappearance.
They should kill her off like they did Poochy on "The Simpsons."
Eliz was not awful on "Angel." She wasn't great, but she didn't stink up the joint. I do think she kind of stunk up the joint on "L&O," though.
Jill H. was the best, in my humble opine, but I do miss Michael Moriarty. He brought a certain something to the show... And I miss Chris Noth, 'cuz he's a looker.
I like Jessie Martin. He's fine. And Dennis Farina should be a great addition, although I'll miss Lenny Briscoe's character.
I'd be really surprised if Eliz R. has any kind of great career in front of her...unless she loses the bug up the butt. Man... Loosen up, girl!
Are you kidding?
My favorite ADA remains Claire Kincaid.
I liked Robinette just fine, found the Lowell character bland and boring (despite her looks), but I loathe, just despise Harmon as an actress, a model, and especially her character on L&O.
Particularly her kneejerk reactions against women.
I feel Southerlyns outbursts of ethical annoyance against Jack to be generally justified. So, shrill or not, she is my fave since the death of Claire. (Thank god for Crossing Jordan)
