Wimbledon Begins Today

Martina Navratilova - Photo:Getty ImagesThe 108th edition of Wimbledon got off to a rousing start today as nine time champion and 47 year old Martina Navratilova won her opening round match against Colombia's Catalina Castano 6-0, 6-1. The match, which lasted a mere 46 minutes, was Navratilova's first singles win in 10 years. It was only Castano's second match ever at The All England Club. "It's almost like playing my mom," said Castano, whose mother is 50. Navratilova will next face Gisela Dulko who she lost to in the opening round of the French Open a few weeks ago.

Third seeded Venus Williams started her bid for a third Wimbledon title with an emphatic 6-3, 6-0 victory over Marie-Gayanay Mikaelian of Switzerland. Her sister Serena, seeded first, plays China's Zheng Jie on Tuesday. Venus won the women's title in 2000 and 2001 but has been runner-up to her sister Serena in each of the last two finals.

Andy Roddick, seeded second, is the highest rated American on the men's side of the draw. He opens against Taiwanese teenager Yeu-Tzuoo Wang on Tuesday. Roddick is coming off his second straight title at the Queens Club warm up tournament played the week before Wimbledon.

Andre Agassi pulled out of the tournament citing a bad hip.
