Olympic Torch Relay in NYC on Saturday

The route for the Olympic torch relay in New York City has been announced and the torch, which will have had stops in L.A., Atlanta, and St. Louis before coming to NY, while be handed off at the start in Queens this Saturday. Mayor Bloomberg said:

On June 19th, when the Olympic Torch leaves Athens Square Park and travels through New York City�s diverse and vibrant neighborhoods, it will be as if it were passing through whole different countries, scattered around the globe. I encourage all New Yorkers to come out along the route and celebrate the excitement of the Olympic Torch Relay as it continues its worldwide journey to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

The Olympic Flame (capitalized, don't you know) will be hitting all the boroughs, winding through a number of neighborhoods and by landmarks, like the Fort Green Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Richmond County Ballpark, Greek Consulate, Statue of Liberty, the U.N., ending in Times Square. Gothamist has heard that while Mayor Bloomberg will be at the torch relay, we're not sure if he's wearing the snazzy Olympic relay jumpsuit. More about who will be carrying the torch in NYC here.

Gothamist saw the pictures of the torch being passed around L.A., by different Olympians and celebrities, like Sylvester Stallone, Ellen DeGeneres, and Tom Cruisewho gave writers legal opportunity to have the words "Tom Cruise" and "flaming" in the same sentence. Today's Times has a picture of Sylvester Stallone carrying the torch in LA yesterday. Is the torch being run across the country in three days?

Um... how will the runners get the torch from Manhattan (5) to Staten Island (6) and back (7)? The ferry?

wow, tom cruise really does look flaming in that photo.

and i think the organizing committee should have had all new yorkers line the streets and just pass the torch down the line. how cool (and impossible) would that have been?
