The Anti-Climactic Beastie Boys Appearance in Midtown

So, yesterday's news that the Beastie Boys would be performing on 53rd Street and Broadway for the Late Show was anti-climactic according to commenters: "What we got was an hour and a half standing in the heat for 15 seconds of the Beastie Boys rapping a capella to inaudible backing tracks as they raced down the sidewalk before heading back inside." Another said "that was the weakest sh*t." Yes, it was all set-up for the actual performance inside the Ed Sullivan Theater, that began with the Beastie Boys coming from the subway station and rapping-n-walking to the theater, which looked great. Lesson learned: TV magic may not be fun for spectators waiting in humid weather, but it's good when you're inside with the AC or a fan going. Reader Dave sent us photos of the a capella rapping (now, Mike D with glasses) and Ben Stiller, faux-injured from some Dodgeball warm-ups. Gothamist is pretty certain this kind of dodgeball doesn't get you as beaten up, but who knows?

YOu need to understand that we try to compare the beastie boys with todays standard of music which is mainstream. What makes them cool is that there pioneers and everything they do is cool. They try to be different in every musical aspect. If you dont see that then your really not a big fan like i am. how many old guys do u see wearing skewed trucker hats. Hardly none, but whats cool about it is that they can pull it off like no one else. If you have to critique them about every little stupid thing they do then your not a true fan. Its these stupid things like 5 sec street performance that make them the beastie boys. If your a true fan youll understand there obscure antics and realize that they are in it just for fun. There not here to please you because they been doing that for 20+ years now. There here to make art and if you critisize their art, i would like to see you do something better people.

I've hung tough with the B-Boys since the get-go, and I gotta say, they need to make it a bit more abstract. The rhymes are a LOT more cobbled together than they used to be, and the diversity of the grooves has diminished GREATLY since Paul's. They seem to be resting on their laurels lately, and despite having COLOSSAL laurels, this record should have been much deeper, given the fact that they had---- what----- 5 years to work on it? I'll take Cool Keith any day, at this point... he's just so much.... well, ILLER.

On a side note: I used to rely on MIKE D as sort of an obscure-70's-culture historian, and I used to count on him tossin' cool throwback references to stuff I recall as a kid, but yo..... He dropped the ball with a line on this new album... (I'm paraphrasing here), "And jus' like Fred Sanford, 'I'm comin' Weezie!'" He's obviously referring to Fred's cry to his deceased wife, as he suffers an imagined heart-attack, but Mike....any fool knows that Fred Sanford's wife was named ELIZABETH, and it's George JEFFERSON'S wife that's called Weezie. Yo' Mike.... how could you let that slip through the editing process!?!?!?

One other observation.... When CYH came out, my bandmates and I used to envy the ease in which the B-Boys seemed to be able to work together.... I mean, it felt like they were just having an assload of FUN, and laid down 20 HOURS of stuff... just buggin'...., then simply stripping away all but the best 50 minutes for the listener to enjoy.

Now, it just seems like they're WORKING at it to hard. Just an opinion.

  • could he at least keep a beat? (unlike meg white)

  • michel gondry performing on the corner of 14th and 6th tonight was waaaay better. playing drums on meg white's kit...hott.

  • Jen

I've always been fond of the Beastie Boys rocking the grandpa shirts since way back when.

TMGB is quite lame. They're whole schtick as the self appointed kings of indie quirk is just too fucking annoying to tolerate anymore. And they are already officially the voice of young quirky music on NPR. Bleagh.

    Regarding age, that's all bullshit. How old is Gil Scott-Heron? He's in his 50s! Jay-Z? He's 35! Dr. Dre? He's 39!

I think instead of people ragging on the Beasties for being white like they did in the past, they are now latched onto their age.

Say what you will about their lineage and history, but they were living and making magic in NYC before half the city became Disney-fied and safe. Stop dissing them for being more than what others claim to be. They did their work and paid their dues.

And regarding dress, how come people rag on the Beasties for wearing trucker hats but say little or nothing about Snoop Dogg and his getups and he's as old as them!

Get over it. People. "It" being yourself.

  • Ari

They are SO not my scene. Actually {I fully understand the death threats to follow} but I find them and their tunes super annoying. Sorry!

  • Lux

    Ari:

What about They Might Be Giants?

Almost 22 years and still going strong.

  • Dave H.

I'll take some of the heat for suggesting it was going to be a performance rather than a sidewalk sprint. That's certainly the impression everyone on the Beastieboys.com message board had and the site admin did nothing to discourage it--even dodging a request for more specifics. At least I got to see one of Dave's spokesmodels making off with a container of Popeye's Full Flavored Green Beans.

  • Jen

I don't think David Letterman reads Gothamist, but Dave H. does (he's the one who has gave us these pics today). And sorry if Gothamist construed a Beasties Letterman-related appearance as a performance. We blame the Internet.

  • Sucka MC

They've been doing the same old same old for quite some time now. I guess consistency is good, but they haven't been innovative in a long, long time. From what I've heard of the new album... zzzzzzzzzzz

  • yo

Wow, who said Dave reads Gothamist? Anyway, the first pic Gothamist had posted yesterday wasn't really from the "performance". I did get in the shot, which is cool I guess. But it would have been of them to perform outside, like Audioslave did a while back for Letterman.

But who are people to criticize the beasties for wearing them hats? So what if they're 38? Their CD will be #1 and it's really the best thing to come out of rap this year. Jay-Z is 30 something and Eminem is 31. Who says you have to be 21 or less to be hot or cool? Britney spears wishes she will be around til 30. What a talentless whore.

By the way, Gothamist is off the hook.

  • Hey, since Dave actually reads Gothamist, any chance that Jen or Jake will appear on Late Show as guests?

  • Hey, since Dave actually reads Gothamist, any chance that Jen or Jake will appear on Late Show as guests?

  • This should not have been billed as "the Beastie Boys will perform on 53rd/Bway" but as "the Beastie Boys will sprint down 53rd with microphones and trucker hats in tow". After standing around waiting for over an hour, I was like "Are they fucking serious? THAT'S it?"

  • Ari

Yo!! What's with all the negativity?? Beastie Boys are excellent and have been rocking out since I was in jr high {am now 32} and haven't had a bad cd yet.

How many other bands {hi... u2 & Zooropa - ech!} can say the same?

  • I've heard that the new album is actually great...

  • brian sodol

does anyone still like these guys? aren't they pushing 40? perhaps they should know how to properly put on a baseball cap. the cap is not meant to skew sideways.
