Recent Records

Recent Records Broken in NYCWe like records. True, we like the kind they call LP's that are the format of choice for old jazz recordings, and good white label grooves, but we also like records of the "unsurpassed measurement" type (thank you dictionary.com). The most recent local records of note that were broken according to our local NOAA office in Upton, NY

Central Park: May 15, 2004 - A record rainfall of 1.16 inches was recorded breaking the old record of 1.14 inches in 1898.
Laguardia Airport: May 15, 2004 - A record high temperature of 89 degrees was recorded breaking the old record of 87 set in 1951.
JFK Airport: May 29, 2004 - A record rainfall of 1.01 inches was recorded breaking the old record of 0.71 inches set in 1984
Newark Airport: June 9, 2004 - A record high temperature of 97 degrees was recorded breaking the old record of 96 set in 1993.

Sometimes Gothamist longs for the days when everything was about being the fastest to run down the block, or being the first to finish a test, or holding your breath the longest (not recommended unless you want to pass out in science class). Records were made to be broken, even the weird ones like " fastest crossing of the English Channel in an amphibious car", backwards running, the longest continuous casino poker game, or even the oldest parachuter (no it's not Bush). And these were all just this week...

Love your image, btw.

When I was a kid I remember obsessing over the Guinness Book of World Records. That one creepy picture of the guy with the world's longest fingernail stayed with me for a long, long time.

Holy Sh*t! Me too!!! Those things curled on and on. i wondered how the hell he slept at night. The other one was the picture of the guy shoving as many cigarettes in his mouth as he could!

Yes!! I had totally forgotten about that one! Wow. I'm 9 all over again.

Do you remember the original Ripley's Believe it or Not show? I think Jack Palance was the host. My sisters and I watched it religiously at dinner time while eating our fish sticks and shells & cheese.

Yea, the fingernail guy was really creepy. I wonder if the same guy still holds the record?
