Tonight, Los Lobos plays the opening night of Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park bandshell. It's basically free--a $3 suggested donation would be much appreciated. Ladysmith Black Mambazo performs at the bandshell on Saturday evening, and again it's only a $3 suggested donation to enter. (But we all know Gothamist readers will give much, much more...right?) After the Los Lobos show, stroll down the slope to Southpaw to see a late show by Neko Case, probably best known these days for her role in the New Pornographers.

If you're not going to see Franz Ferdinand at Webster Hall because you waited too long to get tickets, do yourself a favor and go see James Chance, Gang Gang Dance, Excepter and Enon at the Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope. Chance was the leader of the great late-'70s no-wave band The Contortions (if you find a copy of Buy The Contortions, by all means buy it). The show is a fundraiser for Downtown For Democracy, $15 at the door, $13 in advance.

Friday night is all about !!! at the Bowery Ballroom. Well, if you have a ticket to see Franz Ferdinand at Volume then it's all about Franz. But the other hipster show of the week is !!!, who are an incredible live band. Bring your dancing shoes (or your head-bobbing shoes at the very least) and an appetite for Factory-era funk and post-punk.

On Saturday, local band Dirty On Purpose plays the Mercury Lounge with The Bravery and Benzos. Dirty On Purpose channels the ghost of mid-'90s Yo La Tengo--the more melodic, upbeat moments, not so much the Ira's-freaking-out-on-his-guitar moments. They truly understand the indie rock craft. Go see them and pick up a copy of their fantastic EP, Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow.

The JVC Jazz Festival is underway. Tomorrow, Angelique Kidjo and Femi Juti play the Apollo Theater. Joao Gilberto is at Carnegie Hall on Friday; k.d. lang plays there Saturday. The Ornette Coleman Quartet and the Abbey Lincoln Quartet hit the Carnegie on Sunday. Fred Hersch & Brad Mehldau play the Merkin Concert Hall on Monday. Lou Reed w/The Homes Brothers and Nellie McKay play the Carnegie next Wednesday, the 23rd.

Other shows of note:
- Auf der Maur at the Mercury Lounge tonight.
- Dieselboy at the Sullivan room Thursday. Drum 'n' bass is still alive?
- Ty at the Five Spot on Saturday. UK rapper has a good underground buzz.
- The Wrens w/Jem and Robbers on High Street at the Bowery.
- Acid Mothers Temple at Southpaw on Saturday. Psych rock freakout.
- Skinny Puppy at Irving Plaza on Sunday and Monday. Long live industrial!
- Bigger Lovers w/Grand Champion at Sin-e on Sunday. If ya love the power pop.
- Devendra Banhart w/Joanna Newsom at the Bowery Ballroom on Monday.

This Week's Playlist:
- James Chance: "The Twitch"
- Dirty On Purpose: "Monument"
- !!!: "Hello? Is This Thing On?"
- The Wrens: "Boys You Won't Remember"
- Devendra Banhart: "Will Is My Friend"
- Joanna Newsom: "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie"
- Grand Champion: "Cottonmouth"

The Metropolitan Opera is performing Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" in Central Park tonight.

Who opened for Neko Case on 6/16? I was at the show but for the life of me the artist's name is slipping my mind. . . .

Dave Bielanko was his name. He usually fronts for a band called Marah. Anywho, if anyone's interested, I have some comments and photos about Neko's show here:
