Beastie Boys at 53rd and Broadway Today, 5PM

Updated:

Reader Meatstreets emails a photo of the Beasties performing (well, it's Mike D and MCA) for tonight's Letterman.

Tuesday is the big album release day, and the Beastie Boys are celebrating their new album, To the Five Boroughs, with a live performance at 53rd and Broadway this afternoon. The performance will air on the Late Show with David Letterman, but since the show is taped, BeastieBoys.com suggests getting there around 5PM to "Check It Out." [Via reader Dave, who's been keeping Gothamist on its toes - thanks!]

It seems that the Beastie Boys might be planning to perform in all five boroughs today. David Bowie did that in 2002, but not all in one day. Coolfer on To the Five Bouroughs' political stance.

And June 15th is a big day - not only is it the birthday of Mario Cuomo, Leah Remini, Courteney Cox, Ice Cube, Neil Patrick Harris and others, it's also the day the second season of Curb Your Enthusiasm comes out!

  • where did Adam Horovitz go to school?

  • i go to Packer, so i can't exactly be a huge fan of the Beastie Boys, seeing as that St. Ann's and Packer are giant rivals lol.

wuts this site 4 anyway? i just stumbled across it when google searching whether or not the Beastie Boys really did go to St. Ann's.

  • mugu

  • MrBastard

What? A link for Neil Patrick Harris but no IMDB link for Ice Cube?

    "Anaconda"?

    "Torque"?

I smell prejudice (against bad movies)

Seriously. Going to the Letterman show for the "performance" was a complete waste of time. That site admin at beastieboys.com should reword "Don't say we don't treat you well over here at BeastieBoys.com!" to "You can say we have absolutely no idea what we're talking about".

  • yo

that was the weakest sh*t. someone has to check their facts before posting bs like that. i was standing around for more than an hour and got to see the "show". i saw them for a whole 5 seconds as they ran by rapping to music no one could hear. oh but i got beastie boy stickers, so that made up for it. yea right.

does anyone know about the nature of the bookcovers used by the beasties while at school (i'm betting paper bags)...i'd also like to know the names and ages of any and all family pets...in order of ownership..if owned in tandem please list in order of importance...mammals first..reptiles and rocks last...i eagerly await any and all pre-teen gossip-like responses..thank you for your attention...

  • yo

Yo, that picture was also not from the same performance. i was down at letterman and when that picture was posted around 5:30 it still didn't happen cuz i was back at my office then. i went back out around 6:15 and a little after that, they rapped down the street. yeah, it wasn't a performance at all.

  • To The 3 B-Boys

    yojimbot, thirtysomething rappers? How old is Gil Scott-Heron? He's in his 50s! Jay-Z? He's 35! Dr. Dre? He's 39!

The list goes on and on. But don't diss people because of their age. Let's see if Usher has a legacy when he's past 30.

  • the REAL Stan

Nope. Check your facts my friend.

Adam Yauch went to Friends Seminary.

Their original drummer (Kate Schellenbach - Luscious Jackson) went to Stuy too.

Mike D. is the only BB to go to St. Ann's.

  • Stan

Adam Y. went to St. Ann's, too.

  • Stan in LA

p.s. Thanks for posting that still from the BB/Letterman shoot. It's cool to see what's going to happen on Letterman over 8 hours before it actually happens.

  • Stanley Bosworth

Oh yes, it's time we got back on topic, thanks JVG.

Mike D went to St. Ann's.

Jake D. went to Stuy and Jen C. went to NJ public schools.

(Hence her concern with pandas, "shiny hair," Felicity and Van Halen.)

Nothing says "giving back to the city" like blocking traffic does. Nice!

It seems like when the site admin at Beastieboys.com wrote: "Don't say we don't treat you well over here at BeastieBoys.com!" after directing fans to the Ed Sullivan theater, he may have been a little over-generous, to himself. I thought that a live performance was insinuated. What we got was an hour and a half standing in the heat for 15 seconds of the Beastie Boys rapping a capella to inaudible backing tracks as they raced down the sidewalk before heading back inside. I know the fans around me were all chuckling at the absurd brevity of the moment when it was over. Did get to see Ben Stiller sprawled on the sidewalk with stage blood dripping from his mouth in what I assume was a taped comedy piece. I'll have to watch the show.

  • JVG

Rumor has it that two of the Beastie Boys went to St. Ann's.

  • that's great, if you're blessed with a tv, which I ain't.

Re: Gothamist's Curb Your Enthusiasm comment, does anyone know when the new season begins on HBO?

  • stupid - fish

Yea, tonight on Letterman's show on Channel 2. Earth to Phish....

  • anyone know if this'll get streamed anywhere? wishfully thinking.

  • Jen

Anil, thanks for that note. I would have loved to have seen that, but now I remember: In 2001, I was unemployed, so my entertainment was limited to sock puppets and watching ants build hills in the park.

As for thirtysomething rap, it reminds me of when the Beastie Boys were young and silly, versus older and silly.

  • Brian Van

    "Courtney Cox,

    I love you.

    You're so hot

    on that show...

    Courtney Cox,

    I love you.

    You're so hot

    on that show..."

... whoops, I watch way too much TV...

  • yojimbot

    great, thirtysomething rap!

  • Maxwell did 5 shows in 5 boroughs back in 2001. Just FYI.

  • Bec

If ANYONE gets more info on other shows in other boroughs, please come back here and post.

    Thanks!
