Monroe Wins PSAL Class A Title

Over the weekend at Shea Stadium, Monroe High School of The Bronx defeated George Washington High School to win the Public School Athletic League Class A title in baseball, 4-0. The shutout by Monroe was pitched by Danny Almonte, the former Little Leaguer who was too old to play. Almonte, the games MVP had 11 strikeouts and only one walk. Monroe was also in last year's championship game, but lost to Tottenville 8-7.

Three years ago, Danny Almonte was playing in the Little League World Series and was later discovered to be above the 12 year-old age limit. Almonte is now a 17 year-old sophomore and is 5'11" and 150 lbs with a 87 m.p.h. fastball.

Gothamist is interested in how the Almonte story might turn out. While he looked great pitching to kids 2 years younger than him, it sounds like he can perform against players his age as well. During Saturday's game, Almonte fanned Brewers draft pick, Angel Salome twice. The Times reports that Salome has never struck out more than once against any player this season. Now we're curious to see when Almonte gets drafted and what kind of professional career he might have.
