Noguchi is back!

noguchi museum reopens

Gothamist was there for the re-opening of The Noguchi Museum today in Long Island City. The Noguchi is definitely one of the city's greatest and least appreciated museums- a quiet, serene place to appreciate some great abstract modernist sculpture. The best part is the renovated rock garden. We relaxed on a bench while beautiful hipsters floated past, talking about modern art. Up on the second floor, there are a bunch of installations, and showcases of Noguchi's furniture and product design work- we took a few more pictures and put them in after the jump.

While you are in Long Island City, why not also check out the Socrates Sculpture Park, just down the block from the Noguchi, or PS1, which is about twenty minutes away on foot. More on LIC at LICweb and LICNYC.

Interestingly, I skated over to Socrates sculpture park on Friday (free bonus holiday). I saw the signs up for the Noguchi museum, but when I looked in the front door, they looked a few weeks away from opening. I guess they worked overnight getting ready.

I'm glad to see it back in it's original space. I've only visited when they were across from the Queens Moma.

Went to an openning there last Wednesday and it was fantastic; great space, beautiful garden, great art (and great snanks and drinks- but I dont think that is every day). Only complaint (echo'ed in NYT) is that the second floor has some weird currating (if that is the word for it). Highly recomend it. FYI for the ladies though- lots of walking on gravel etc- wear flats.
