andre, I've heard that all the bars showing Euro 2004 matches are forced to charge the $20 per viewer fee by Setanta (www.setanta.com), the channel providing the satellite feed to U.S. commercial establishments (they also provide the feed to residential customers via regional cable companies, where the home viewer pays per match [$19.95/first round, $24.95/quarters/semis/final] or for the whole tournament package [$179]).

So basically, Euro 2004 is a pay-per-view event here, and Setanta is making sure everyone pays. Reportedly, Setanta has authorized only 18 bars in Manhattan to carry the matches. I was told that Setanta sends their own people to each bar to man the doors and collect the fees. It appears that the money collected doesn't go to the bar, but goes directly to the satellite channel itself.

Go Latvia!

Does anyone know the story behind the outrageous $20 cover the bars are charging during the Euro matches?
