Can Les Blues Do It Again?

David Beckham; Photo: Getty ImagesThe collective eyes of the football world will be on Portugal for the next three weeks as EURO 2004 is set to kick off tomorrow. And we mean football in the international sense, i.e. round ball, played on a pitch, nets in the goals, etc.

The premiere matchup of phase one appears to be Sunday's tilt between France and their English rivals (see the full schedule here). Unsurprisingly, words have already been exchanged in the press. Earlier in the week, Frenchman Robert Pires predicted a decisive victory for Les Blues. English midfielder Paul Scholes was unimpressed. "I read last week that Pires thinks they're going to beat us 3-1," Scholes said. "They're just ultra-confident. That's the way they feel." Asked if the England team's motivation was to bring the champions down to earth, he replied 'Yeah, it is, but it would be nice to say that after the game rather than before it." English defenseman John Terry is still bothered by a hamstring injury and will not play in the match.

Gothamist has fond memories of watching the Euro 2000 Final between France and Italy upstate in Bearsville with the Welsh band Super Furry Animals while they were recording their album Rings Around The World, but that's a story for another time.

Check out this thread in the Gothamist Forums for bars and pubs where you can knock back a few pints while you take in the action. Feel free to add your suggestions there or in the comments below.

Thats Les Bleus, not Les Blues...

Does anyone know the story behind the outrageous $20 cover the bars are charging during the Euro matches?

andre, I've heard that all the bars showing Euro 2004 matches are forced to charge the $20 per viewer fee by Setanta (www.setanta.com), the channel providing the satellite feed to U.S. commercial establishments (they also provide the feed to residential customers via regional cable companies, where the home viewer pays per match [$19.95/first round, $24.95/quarters/semis/final] or for the whole tournament package [$179]).

So basically, Euro 2004 is a pay-per-view event here, and Setanta is making sure everyone pays. Reportedly, Setanta has authorized only 18 bars in Manhattan to carry the matches. I was told that Setanta sends their own people to each bar to man the doors and collect the fees. It appears that the money collected doesn't go to the bar, but goes directly to the satellite channel itself.

Go Latvia!
