When some New Yorkers are abandoning the city for more picturesque settings (though, what is more picturesque than some of the city's fine parks, Gothamist does not know), lack of high-speed Internet service, and $600 bottles of no-brand champagne, dedicated city folks will be getting their butts over to East 26th Street, between 5th Avenue, Madison Avenue, and Madison Square Park for the Second Annual Big Apple Barbecue. The relief of BBQ-loving NYers, Blue Smoke and the Union Square Hospital Group are thankfully reprising the sucessful event (went through 8,000 pounds of meat last year), welcoming some returning and new barbecue pit masters:
- Chris Lilly from Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q, Decatur, AL
- Paul Kirk from K. C. Baron of Barbeque, Kansas City, MO
- Mike Mills Memphis Championship Barbecue, Las Vegas, NV and 17th Street Bar & Grill, Murphysboro, IL
- Ed Mitchell from Mitchell's Ribs, Chicken & BBQ, Wilson, NC
- Scott Roberts from The Salt Lick, Driftwood, TX
- Otis Walker from Smoki O's Barbeque, St Louis, MO
- Ken Callaghan from Blue Smoke, New York, NY
There will be jazz and seminars, as well as lots of delicious food. Gothamist thinks the big event will be Saturday's All-Star Barbecue Sauce Tasting that has authors and gourmands Jeffrey Steingarten and Calvin Trillin putting their palates on the line, with Colman Andrews of Saveur moderating. You buy tickets that will let you purchase all sorts of 'cue and fixins' - we couldn't find any info on the sit, but expect to spend around $10-20 (depending on how big your appetite is and how much beer you want to drink). All proceeds go to the Madison Square Park Conservancy and VH1 Save the Music.
Check out Gothamist's coverage of the First Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party to see what we ate last year; it was also a monumentous day because we met Jeffrey Steingarten.

BBQ-lovers might also want to check out this gig, which happens on July 24th.

Last year was a hoot, and I'm crestfallen that I'll be away on business for this year's edition.

Being a Southerner who makes it to New York about every two months, I may just make a trip up this weekend for the chance to have Mitchell's barbeque and Big Bob Gibson BBQ...AND Steingarten. Amazing.
sounds more like a marketing event for fancy high-paid chefs than a barbeque.
I haven't been to all of the restaurants here, but from what I know, most of these BBQ joints (Blue Smoke aside) aren't fancy - they sell pork ribs at $8.50 per person if you're having a buffet of 25-50 people.
I've been to the Salt Lick in Texas and the last thing it is is fancy - it's very down to earth and delicious.

Weird, I'm heading out to the Salt Lick this weekend (just outside of Austin)
It's pretty great for an all you can eat place.
Expect to spend $30, plus beer, if you expect to get a REAL sampling of BBQ from these places. Also, bring some wet-naps. Last year's event was a bit of a let down, as it wasn't managed all that well. Haphazard lines, poorly staffed booths, and often times I had no idea what I was eating. Still, now that they have a year behind them to re-plan, I have high hopes for this year. Now, let just hope that the rain stays away this time!
I was at Mitchell's in North Carolina about a month ago. Unless your idea of fancy includes non-descript, mammoth cinder block buildings, it is not fancy. Their BBQ is better than anything I've had here in NY, but there was better to be had in NC.
There's a place on the Outer Banks that has some ridiculous Eastern Carolina style BBQ-- the name escapes me now. Another amazing place (that I would love to see at the Big Apple BBQ Block Party is Dreamland BBQ, out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. That would make it a perfect BBQ weekend.
