Sopranos Season Finale

2004_06_sopranosfin.jpg

Gothamist won't comment on the minute details of the Sopranos finale, in case some people didn't catch it last night (but we'll chat about it in the comments), but we have to say that Tony's reaction to A.J.'s interest (as reported by Carmela) in "event planning" was priceless: "Event planning? Isn't that kind of gay?" (Or something like that.) Then Carmela saying that A.J. watches the movie, 54, all the time... David Chase, you kill us again and again, almost as good as you kill your characters.

Thoughts on the finale from the NY Times, Newsday, and the Star-Ledger.

Does anyone know the name of the Van Morrison song at the end of the 2004 final episode???

  • Tony

Best show on TV and people still find a way to rip it . Amazing...

Annoyed by the multiple Van Morrison needle drops in the finale.

Adrianna RIP ep. so good. Loved "Wrapped in my Memory."

mediocre season. the second to last episode was amazing. other than that...blah. i, too, am over tony/melfi. the first few seasons were sooooo much better. no sex/city, no oz, lousy sopranos. i guess curb is the only reason to pay for HBO.

David chase has made it clear in numerous interviews that he intends to throw in characters and plot points that will never be resolved. And, I think this has been apparent since season 1, though a lot more people have been complaining about it as of late.

I was disappointed that Janice (Aida Turturro) was present so infrequently this season.

Loved the editing on the A.J. / 'rents scene. Sleeves up - down - up - DOH!

Pretty good season overall - two really lame episodes (dream sequence & Carm's tryst) but the rest were pretty strong. Plus a great year for ironic songs.

As for Finn/Vito, no I'm sorry, the Russian is not coming back, Sil really did kill Ade, and come to think of it, my own life has some unresolved arcs I need to look into. Although if I leave those loose ends out there maybe some exciting twist will come of it.

  • Um, about that "Hell hath no fury like the family" bit, did I miss the fury? It must have happened when I dozed up during Tony's therapy session. Although I must say that I fell off the couch (laughing) when Tony was scrambling through the woods.

People should be used to the fact by now that not every scene or moment in the show is a part of some huge over-arcing storyline.

    poor Vito :(

i like the close up of blundetto's face wound, the way they just lingered on it. other than that the episode was kinda lame.

ps im so over melfi/tony's sessions.

    Doug,

Nothing happened on that subplot. Which sort of epitomizes one of the problems of this season ... subplots come and go without explanation or development only to reappear much later only to disappear again.

  • What happened to the subplot with Meadow's boyfriend/fiance and the missed Yankee game?

Farewell to a remarkable (and relentless) season of the Sopranos. Once again, I'm left without a good reason to watch TV.

There's very little to comment on. I'm sort of numbed out. Even the lead-in for this week's episode was hard to watch, as I watched episode 12 only once and couldn't go back to it. Emmys are on the way for them...

Personally, I thought it the weakest of all the seasons -- both in the finale as well as the season as a whole. Where, exactly, has the season gone but right back to where it started for all intents and purposes. Throwing in the sting on Johnny Sack and crew seemed, at best, almost just tacked on. The show has really fallen off the last couple of seasons.

As a comparison, I recently re-watched a number of episodes from the first two seasons and, unfortunately, there is almost no comparison. The storyline (esp. in the first season) was so much tighter and flowed without the current "but what about [insert character name that has been essentially neglected for too long]."

Granted, there have been moments of its prior brilliance, but overall, although still better than 95% of broadcast shows, the show is just not what it was. Not sure if it jumped the shark, but the Columbus Day episode would be my episode marking that event if it has.

Glad HBOs best show of the last two years, "The Wire" is returning in September (as well as "Dead Like Me" on Showtime next month).

Never more has James Gandolfini looked like a bear, when he's scrambling through the woods. And wasn't that the name of his character in Get Shorty - Bear?
