Subway Shooting Investigation

Subway Shooting; Photo: Newsday

After Tuesday's subway shooting of aspiring actress Monica Meadows, police have started their investigation by doing what happens in these matters: Questioning acquaintances of the victim. Police interviewed her former roommate, especially since he fit the description of the shooter. But Michael Babel was released, after his alibi checked out. But Babel did have a long day of questioning: "They put me through the wringer and asked me a lot of questions. I wrote a 13-page essay and told them exactly where I was. We talked about a $1 million bail, Rikers Island, years in prison," he said. "It was a long day — not like anything I've ever experienced."

Meanwhile, doctors at Bellevue are calling Meadows the "miracle model" because the bullet narrowly missed internal organs, when it entered her left shoulder, near the armpit. The shooting has also sparked the interest of different theater companies in the city, who are interested in offering Meadows work. Really? Oh, dear, Gothamist worries that other would-be starlets don't stage stunts like this (we just hope that they stick to embarrassing themselves on reality shows). But other actors are worried about their safety, given this shooting and the murder of Sarah Fox. Hey, thesps, join the crowd! Terrible things can happen to anyone. But, the notion of self-centered actors does make us think Gawker might be onto something, when suggesting that Meadows gets a shout-out on Tony night.

Also, did anyone else notice AM New York's cover headline yesterday, "SUBWAY FASHION SHOOT"? It was in such bad taste, yet terribly clever... it's clear that AMNY has decided that tabloidy headlines are the way to compete with metro.

Oh dear. I feel like Ray from Ghostbusters, I just chose the form of the Traveller from hell with an evil thought.

No, there won't be an aspiring actor/actress or model who stages a violent crime to get publicity. But someone's writing a script about that right now. It'll be a motion picture in September 2005, however before that it'll probably be a plot on CSI: New York - maybe sometime next January.

Note on the victim, she's got an entry wound scar, an exit wound scar, and some nerve damage (as quoted by one of her doctors). Her modelling/acting career is far from set, as she'd have to deal with those things to land gigs now.

Her roommate sounds genuinely excited to now be in a part of her spotlight.

What an asshole.

First 50 cent and now her... is it going to be a new trend to have careers developed from the foundation of getting shot?

I do hope they catch the guy and she gets better though

Publicity stunt! I was just thinking that. Better yet, they should make a Law & Order about a similar stunt, seeing as how she played a bit part on L&O:CI. It could get really meta: Dennis Farina and Det. Green could mention the fact that she was in "Cops & Courts," an obvious L&O stand-in.

Hello!, anyone remember Marla Hanson?

The Model/Actress who invented the "fame from victim of crime" routine. This woman is still sporting around her scars to land a gig. Last I heard she was a paid spokesperson for Glaxowelcome; pimping a drug for post traumatic stress (she has even managed to make 9/11 about HER).

Hanson got her face slashed by a guy with a razor and immediately gave a press conference to show them off.

There were interviews, book deals, made-for-tv movies and eventually the "Marla Who?".

The thing that really got under my skin about the newspaper coverage was the obvious implication that the shooting was extra tragic because she is very pretty, you know.

Just read about a 49 year-old female health aide that was shot on the streets of Bed Sty yesterday afternoon. Like model-gal with organs in her shoulder, this happened in the middle of an afternoon.

As a test, let's see if she gets full front-page coverage (and photo spread) on the Post & News. And let's see if she gets any job offers as a result of the shooting.

More importantly, with Gothamist cover it?

Link, in case anybody is interested:

NY Times Article

actually, I'd like to see Gothamist MAKE some news by digging up Marla Hanson for its interview with a New Yorker series.

I can't wait to see the media re-broadcast that video of Hanson's face with a a zigzag of stitches across it, it would be soooo White Trash NYC.
