The best part of the Olympics might be the torch relay on June 19th in New York, especially since construction is still not completed in Athens. The Mayor announced the torch bearers today, and by far, the coolest torch bearer is artist Chuck Close. Awesome! There are a number of athletes during the relay (Dikembe Mutombo, Stephon Marbury, Boomer Esiason, Sarah Hughes), as well as educators (Columbia's Lee Bollinger, CUNY's Roscoe Brown Jr), a Diddy-of-all-trades, and other artists (Alvin Ailey's Judith Jamison, actor Brian Stokes Mitchell - swoon!), plus some annoying people (yes, Elisabeth Hasselback, Gothamist is talking to you). But Gothamist suggests you take a look at the bios of some regular New Yorkers who are bearing the torch (bios in this press release) - it's very inspiring.

Jameson Gong sounds really interesting:
"Jameson Gong, New York, NY: Jameson, a Chinatown native, is a community activist focusing on the revitalization of Lower Manhattan and founder of chinatownnyc.com. He is a member of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation’s advisory committee to promote tourism in the area; he is president of the NY Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans, the nation’s premiere Asian civil rights and advocacy group; and he is a stand-up comedian."
Definitely, but I think all of them sound really interesting. It's a great snapshot of people in the NY metro area.
Of course, Chuck Close's selection is extra special since he'll be carrying the torch while in his wheelchair...good for him!

Chuck Close spoke at my graduation ceremony and if I hadnt been so hungover I wouldve really enjoyed it, because I LOVE his work.
