There are no American men (or Reebok trucker hats) left in the men's side of the draw as 2nd seed Andy Roddick lost to Frenchman Olivier Mutis in five sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2. Mutis had not won a tour match this year until the first round at in Paris. Now he has the biggest win of his career.

Roddick hit 15 aces but lost his serve nine times. His groundstrokes became more and more erratic as the match wore on. "I was waffling," Roddick said. "I wasn't decisive enough. I wasn't sticking with things I wanted to do." Roddick had lost in the first round the past two years.

The only other American male to make the second round was 27th seed Vincent Spadea, but he also fell Julien Jeanpierre 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. No American men reached the third round, the first time that's happened at a Grand Slam event in 31 years.

The American women are faring much better with Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati both advancing to the thrid round. Capriati, the 2001 champion, defeated Kveta Peschke 7-5, 6-3.

"I guess it's up to us to keep America alive here," Capriati said. "It's a different game out on the clay. For most of the American guys, it's difficult out there for them. For women it's more of an all-court game."

Defending women's champ Justine Henin-Hardenne didn't fare as well losing in the second round 7-5, 6-4, to the 86th-ranked Tathiana Garbin of Italy.
