Vermeer On Display At Sotheby's

There's a Vermeer, "Young Woman Seated at the Virginals," on display at Sotheby's today and tomorrow. This painting was thought to be real, then fake, then real again and will be auctioned off in London later in the summer. It's the first Vermeer to be auctioned since 1921, and the AP reports that it's expected to sell for at least $5 million.

The Frick Collection has three Vermeers: Girl Interrupted at Her Music, Mistress and Maid, and Officer and Laughing Girl. And there's this small film from 1990, All the Vermeers in New York, that Gothamist just loves (probably because it reminds of us Eric Rohmer). And the movie, Girl With the Pearl Earring, based on the Tracy Chevalier novel, is on DVD.

Note that GWAPE is a movie based on a book based on a painting -- none others in that category, that I can think of.

It's now lost to the NY Times' $2.95-per-article archive, but Joe Queenan's "Eight Reasons New York Is Better," which compared Vermeer-filled NYC to non-Vermeer cities around the country, was really hilarious.
