Tom Glavine nearly notched the first no-hitter for the Mets in their 43-year history and the first of his career. He came within four outs of history when Kip Pellow (who?) got a 2 out hit in the eighth inning. The Mets won the game 4-0 (box score) and Glavine had a shut-out with 1 hit, 1 walk, and 8 strikeouts. Glavine was actually perfect through 7 innings. The closest the Mets have ever come to a no hitter was in 1975 when Tom Seaver came within one out of the feat (see Times graphic on other close calls). Murray Chass of The Times wonders why the Mets can't get a no-no.
The win also got the Mets to the .500 mark after 44 games. The last time they were at that mark was on April 16. Last season, the Mets were never above .500 after April 9. The Mets go for a winning percentage against the Phillies on Tuesday. Glavine, the long time Atlanta Brave, is now 6-2 with 2.13 ERA after going 9-14 with a 4.52 ERA in his first season as a Met last year.
The next two weeks will be the real test for the Mets. They will no longer face injury-laden teams like the Rockies, but will face the Phillies and Marlins exclusively in 12 games over 13 days. The two teams sit atop the NL East and the games could make the Mets, who sit 3 games out of first, contenders or also rans.

Things are looking up, but I won't call it a comeback just yet. If they can get past the Marlins they shall get my blessing. I still can't get used to Glavine being on the Mets. It doesnt seem right...
I was actually at this game, and it was awesome. It was a bit of a letdown at the end -- after giving up that hit it seemed like people started heading for the exits -- but it was still definitely the best pitched game I have ever been to. I've always liked Glavine, even on the Braves (who I know I should abhor as a Mets fan, but hey, they got me started watching baseball in '91). Good to see that he can still pitch well at his age.
