Jon Stewart's Commencement Speech

2004_05_williammary.jpg

In the tradition of comedians going back and yukking it up at their alma maters, Jon Stewart gave the commencement speech at the College of William & Mary this past week. Some thoughts to the class of 2004:
Please don’t be mad. I know we were supposed to bequeath to the next generation a world better than the one we were handed. So, sorry.

I don’t know if you’ve been following the news lately, but it just kinda got away from us. Somewhere between the gold rush of easy internet profits and an arrogant sense of endless empire, we heard kind of a pinging noise, and uh, then the damn thing just died on us. So I apologize.

Stewart, after requisite mentions of his dorm and his academic prowess, also mentions how he got over September 11 at the end of the speech. Read it and weep.

Of course, one of the classic commencement speeches is Conan O'Brien speech to Harvard on Class Day 2000: "There's also sadness today. A feeling of loss that you're leaving Harvard forever. Let me assure you that you never really leave Harvard. The Harvard fundraising committee will be on your ass until the day you die."

You can watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Late Show with Conan O'Brien" at least twice a day with cable. Oh, and in Al Franken's Class Day speech to Harvard, he discusses knowing how students wanted someone more famous.

Tony Kushner's address for columbia college was just as good. No transcript on-line yet, but there's grainy realvideo link to it here: http://ccnmtl.columbia.edu/projects/broadcast/ramfiles/2004/cc_arch.ram. (It's a video file of the whole event, start at 1:05 into the stream)

will ferrell's address at harvard in 2003 was also hilarious.
