Coolfer's Weekend Music Picks

[Ed.: If it's Wednesday, then it means we get Coolfer to tell us what shows we could be and should be seeing this weekend. Bring it on!]

Joey RamoneTonight is a special night because of a very New York event. Irving Plaza will host the Joey Ramone's Birthday Bash. Guests include Tommy and Marky Ramone, Mickey Leigh (Joey's brother), Andy Shernoff of the Dictators, The Alkaline Trio, Supersuckers, the Dickies and Richard Lloyd of Television. The night's MC will be none other than Matt Pinfield. The show is sold out so if you want to attend, hit the tickets section on Craigs List or get to the venue early to haggle with the scalpers (not that Coolfer or Gothamist condone scalping, of course). There will be a silent auction for celebrity-signed/designed T-shirts and other items, which can be previewed at JoeyRamone.com.

Magnetic Fields' i

The Magnetic Fields play two nights at the lovely Town Hall. My money says a lot of people at the Thursday show will also be at the Friday show. That's how it is with the cult bands with the loyal following. Tickets are $25. They're out supporting a brand new album, i. (That's not a typo.)

Zero 7 hits Irving Plaza on both Thursday and Friday. Coolfer has never seen Zero 7 but has heard great things about their live show. A favorable review goes a long way, right?

New York's hipster set loves The Fever. They've got a CD release party at the Bowery Ballroom on Friday with ARE Weapons and Robbers on High Street opening. Tickets are a mere $13.

Indie rockers Deathray Davies stop by the Mercury on Friday. New Yorkers Hopewell is also on the bill. They've been recorded by Dave Friddman and Mercury Rev, which should give you a good idea of their sound and credentials. Good stuff.

The singer/songwriter crowd will like Jason Collett, who is a member of Toronto indie rock collective Broken Social Scene. Jason's solo material is heavy on the folk and Americana. He has a track, "Blue Skies," on the new L Word soundtrack.

Psyche rock time! Acid Mothers Temple will hit the Knitting Factory on Sunday (and Southpaw in June). Coolfer faves Subarachnoid Space opens the show.
