The safety issue seems a bit dubious since lightning can travel from several miles away to zap you. At least that's what I've been told.

I will always have a dear place in my heart for the classic scene in Poltergeist when the kid is counting the seconds between the lightning and thunder and then the tree breaks through his window and tires to eat him. I'm laughing right now cause it sounds funny but I was scared as hell when i saw this as a kid.
