New York magazine reports that East Village restaurateurs Jack and Grace Lamb's sweet Blue Goose Cafe will close, to make way for a "casual" version of Jewel Bako, called Jewel Bako Makimono. While a more casual version the delicious sushi restaurant is a good thing, Gothamist will miss the bright and welcoming Blue Goose, where we could duck in for a sweet treat (see our visit to the Blue Goose Cafe) as we wandered in the East Village. There can never be too many places that sell pastries, in our book.
The readers at sushi NYC love Jewel Bako. And the Lambs' other restaurant, Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar, is a great place for some oysters and drinks or for a decadent tasting menu.

i liked the goose for having some upscale snacky treats not available elswhere in the 'hood, but their coffee was barely potable. the initial idea was that it'd serve as more of a neighborhood place, in contrast to jack's and jewel bako which have led to a steady stream of town cars idling on east 5th st 6 nights a week. i also confess a deep suspicion of their ability to do anything "casual" - i don't mean it as a dig, it's just not their style.
grace & jack have also taken over the two storefronts adjacent to jewel bako. one was a shady dentist, the other a pet store that had been a neighborhood fixture for as long as i've lived on the block. i think they are expanding jewel bako and also opening ANOTHER place, and upscale shanghaiese cuisine kind of place. it's a lot for sleepy little 5th st to take.
I agree - casual in the Blue Goose vein might not be their strong point, but it was such a nice sunny place to sit and read. And I heard rumors about the Chinese place also. Apparently their landlord offered the space to them. That, plus being the Paper magazine as beautiful people - big stuff.
the last thing the e.v. needs is yet another restaurant. residents need other services and the demise of the pet shop, the dentist, a local hardware store, and now a coffee shop are bad thing for the community.
