[Ed: Gothamist is lucky to present some more music picks for the weekend from Coolfer.]
Some of underground hip hop's finest stop by
Southpaw on Friday night. The prolific
Madlib (who isn't too underground anymore) is joined by
Peanut Butter Wolf and
J.Rocc (of the Beat Junkies). You may know Madlib for his album
Shades of Blue (on Blue Note), or you may know his as one-half of
Jaylib, or you may know him as a founder of the
Lootpack, or as the leader of
Yesterday's New Quintet. Most recently Madlib teamed up with
MF Doom and released an album as
Madvillain.
For fans of rock and/or roll...Trans Am brings its dark post-punk to the Bowery Ballroom. The Figgs hit Sin-e on Saturday. There's an indie rock supershow at the Mercury Lounge on Saturday night, with Shannon Wright, Thalia Zedek, Brian Straw and Western Keys. And last but not least, the Knitting Factory is hosting the 14th annual Night of a Thousand Stevies on Friday. Yes, it's a tribute to Stevie Nicks.
On the electronic front, Colder plays Rothko on Friday night for Flyer Magazine's 6th anniversary party. Colder just released a great album on Trevor Jackson's Output Recordings. It's equal parts German electronic and art school post-rock. Also on the bill are Dead Combo (think the Stooges meet Suicide), Tim Sweeney, Novamen, Alden Tyrell and Alex English. On Saturday, Pianos hosts the Audio* Music Festival, with Cex, Kill Memory Crash, Drop the Lime, Mixel Pixel, DJ Kid Kameleon and the Secret Frequency Crew.
Lastly, local downtempo-Latin-fusion collective
Si*Se performs at
Makor on Saturday. They had an album out on Luaka Bop (David Byrne's label) a few years ago.
