Mets Sweep Giants; Yankees' Streak Stops at Eight

The Mets won their season-high fourth straight game last night, defeating the San Francisco Giants, 2-1 in 11 innings (box score). It was their first series sweep of the season and moved them to 13-15, two games below .500 and - shh...don't tell them - three games out of first in the sorry NL East. The victory came on a game-winning home run by Mike Piazza, who just set the home run record for catchers on Wednesday. Before Piazza's dramatics in the bottom of the 11th, ultra-slugger Barry Bonds was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs, but David Weathers pitched himself out of the situation.

In Oakland, the Yankees winning streak came to a halt at the hands of the A's, losing 7-4 (box score). With the loss, the Yankees fell to second place in the AL East behind the Red Sox (the two were briefly tied for first). Javier Vazquez, the Yankees starter, surrendered seven runs in less than six innings of work. During their win streak, five of the eight wins for the Yankees were against the A's.

Its very early in the season. This is just a taste of whats to come. I expect great things from the Mets this season and I don't think i'll be disappointed... Hopefully...
