Coolfer's Music Picks for the Weekend

[Ed. note: Gothamist got our favorite music blogger, Coolfer, to take a break from his copious music industry watching and give us the scoop on this weekend's shows that might be of interest. Without further ado, straight from Coolfer:]

A few of the best shows this weekend are sold out, but this is New York and there's never a shortage of good live music.

The Cardigans play Southpaw Sunday night and the Bowery Ballroom Monday night, and both shows are sold out. Clinic, in their only New York appearance, play the sold-out Southpaw on Saturday. (Opening that show will be local duo Ratatat.) The Shins play the Bowery Ballroom Sunday night and guess what? It too is sold out. Oh, and some guy named Morrissey is in town.

So is there any show with tickets still available? Cult favorites Sloan (pictured, left) hit the Bowery Ballroom Friday and Saturday evenings, with The Kicks opening both nights. If you want a truly unique evening of music, hit the Mercury Lounge Friday night for the one-and-only Tammy Faye Starlite and karaoke crooner Baby Dayliner, who are opening for El Vez. Local rock band The Head Set play the Luna Lounge on Friday night and are highly recommended for fans of the New York indie rock sound (you know what I mean...it rhymes with "croaks").

Holgar Czukay, a founding member of krautrock legends Can, plays the Knitting Factory Saturday night. He will be joined by longtime collaborator U-She and, according to the Knit's website, the performance will cover 30 years of his music and will include DJing, a wide array of instruments and "support stuff from his Internet collaborations."

On the club side of things, techno legend Jeff Mills spins at Avalon on Saturday night, and Mission hosts Detroit Soul & Broken Beats featuring Ayro and Titonton.

If cover bands are your thing, Super Diamond performs its Neil Diamond tribute at Irving Plaza on both Friday and Saturday nights.

[Thanks, Coolfer!]

  • Super Diamond was awesome. I had forgotten that Neil wrote/performed the song from ET: Heartlight. "Turn on your heartlight/let it shine wherever you go" That was the highlight of my night.

  • Screw all that noise. New Model Army is playing Southpaw in Park Slope tonight.

Their set at the Knitting Factory last night was one of the best things I've seen in years. You all owe it to yourselves. Trust me.

  • Erika Herzog

... also mark kozelek for an early show at mercury lounge on sunday (mother's day, 5/9/2004). 7:30 p.m. should be wonderful and amazing.

Sondre Lerche monday night- but that's not the weekend, is it?

  • huh?

what are you talking about kowgurl?

  • Wow, great use of the non/commitall/ evasive comments to get rid of mine...you guys are SMMMMOOOOOTH.

  • connienyc

Sloan never fails to put on a fun, energetic show. I can't wait for tomorrow evening!

  • Can't wait for Super Diamond Saturday night! Sadly going to be belting out "Sweeeeeet Caroline... BAH BAH BAH" into the ears of the poor fools around me.

  • I'll be feeling the funk friday night at midnight @ S.O.B.'s when DJ Le Spam and the Le Spam All-Stars will be playing.

  • Jeff Mills, Ayro, and Titonton being plugged on Gothamist??? I'm calling my eye doctor. I thought things were getting fuzzy after getting past the Czukay plug....Jen you may just be burnlab material after all.

  • ...and Ethan Lipton at the Living Room on Saturday, for that matter, with Pinataland, Life in a Blender, and Deb Montgomery. A very good show, if I do say so myself.

  • so psyched for Cardigans at Southpaw. leafblower's going, too.

unlike morrissey tomorrow, i will not be wearing a custom-made t for the event.

  • ... and Laura Veirs at The Fez Friday night.

  • Jason

Don't forget about the unbelievable folk artist Patty Griffin at Town Hall tomorrow and Saturday!

Just got my Sloan tickets. I can't believe they're a "cool" band now, but whatevs. Love love love them.

  • Damnitall. I thought I Googled Tammy's name to check the correct spelling. Ugh.

  • Tammy Faye Starlite. Not Starlight. As she explains, "L-I-T-E like the adjective."

Highly recommended, for those who take their beliefs over easy and like a trashy mouth.

I was so excited to see Sloan listed in Coolfer's picks, because I'm going to their show tomorrow night. This is what happens when other (more music savvy) people say, "Wanna see this band play?" and I agree blindly...but I'm just in it to win it, so it doesn't really matter.
