More details about Julia Diaco, the NYU freshman arrested for dealing drugs: She was released after pleading not guilty and posting $10,000 bail. Her lawyer is saying, "A lot of the drugs were for use by herself." Yeah, $1,000 worth of pot for herself. Recreational drug users always have scales on hand.
With siblings at Harvard and Princeton, plus attention on her wealthy family, the papers are painting a picture of a rich girl desperately trying to find herself, using the drugs to make friends and drugdealing as a way to be "down." Diaco befriended the homeless and brought them back to her dorm and fed them. But the craziest thing is that Newsday says that many female NYU student avoid Washington Square Park, while Diaco frequented it. There are so many female students in the park! That's how you get the class! Anyway, one of her homeless friends, Jameil Wilson says he warned her about selling drugs in the park, because of the many cops (this is true - even David Lee Roth was arrested there buying a dimebag), as well attests to the quality of the pot Diaco sold, "She sold me some weed a couple of times. It was pretty good stuff."
A dormmate continued to tell the press, "They [and Gothamist assumes that he means the NYPD] spent a long time catching the most inept drug dealer in the world," adding that Diaco was just looking for friends. And in the "a-ha!" section, one NYU student says "definitely more than one girl at NYU selling" drugs. Well, duh!
Washington Square News, the NYU student paper, calls Diaco a "coke peddler" and notes that journalists have swarmed Diaco's dorm, Hayden Hall. Seriously, after all the craziness at NYU, we're surprised the Post or Daily News haven't sent their reporters to go undercover at NYU, not that they'd have to try very hard.

i think just saying "recreational" means that one doesn't have $1000 worth of pot in their residence. anyone with any history of pot or cooking knowledge would know that stuff can go bad and $1000 worth of pot would go bad before even a pothead could finish it.
I'm glad to see that this case hasn't been brushed off because of her family's influence and money-power. Sure, staking out an 18 year old recreational dealer isn't the best use of the Feds and NYPD's time, but the truth of the matter is that NYU and in particular Hayden Hall have had a tough time lately with drugs (illegal and prescribed) and the student population. "$1,000 worth of drugs" could be two ounces of skunk bud @ $500 each. That's really not very much money, nor much pot for that matter. Many users can easily go through 1/2 ounce in a week.

$1000 is a hair more than an ounce of high quality weed in New York. Since it requires a little hassle for me (so I don't mind smoking it for 4-6 weeks-given the cost and quality, it's still more than enough to knock everyone I give it to on their ass, particularly all those folks that rave about the delivery pot in bklyn) to acquire it, I frequently find myself with near than amount (sometimes buy a little for friends, sometimes want to make brownies, etc.). The bag it comes from, if my eyes are any decent measure, typically has several orders of magnitude more than what I'm holding at a given time. That's being a dope dealer. She was probably buying and selling off smaller pieces. College dopeheads are misery and paranoid, so she probably bought the scale to fend out complaints that someone's dime bag was light, but everyone got a real charge out of using cool drug lingo like 'dime bag' and 'light.'

It's silly that someone could go to jail for 20 years for committing a victimless crime. And it's especially silly that it's someone who's barely even an adult under the law. In fact, if you consider the law regarding legal intoxicants (alcohol), she's not even an adult. (And I say this as someone who has never purchased or sold illegal drugs.)

In NY, up to 25g (first and second offense), civil citation and a c note. Subsequent offenses may get you 15 days, and a misdemeanor. Up to 2oz is still a misdemeanor, but can net you a year. The important thing is, however, since the Guliani administration's quality of life policing initiative, getting nabbed toking up will likely land you overnight in the Tombs (Manhattan) or Red Hook (I think) for Bklyn. It used to be what was called (I think) a desk ticket, meaning you simply had to show up and pay the fine, but clearly all those stoners buying snickerdoodles at bodegas were debilitating the quality of life of deli owners (and stopping the masses of legit customers buying snacks at 3AM). And as an aside, doesn't everyone miss Urban Fetch? That was the most amazing thing ever made for a stoner. Damn. That's how I got my first DVD player and a Playstation (both after 1AM).

I guess I'm different than all these other kids claiming to be from Julia's town. I graduated with her and throughout our 4 years of high school together she has been nothing but a horrible human being. The Julia you see laughing as she sits in the courtroom with her crying mother is the real Julia. There have been plenty of instances in my school where she has used her family privelages to do whatever she likes. Hell, even in her freshman year of high school she ran for class president and lost. However, her parents called in and demanded a revote by the administration. She lost the revote, but in the end still got a spot on the council as "Assistant President," a position that was created solely for her. I've gone to school with Jewel since first grade. You all should stop judging someone you don't know anything about. I've been her friend for 13 years now, and she has just as many problems as everyone else, maybe more, but because she is beautiful and her family has money, people always assume her life is perfect. How would you like to live your life with disfiguring grafts covering the entire length of your legs and much of your arms? How would you like to go through painful and risky surgeries EVERY SINGLE YEAR of your life to ensure that no futher damage is done? I have gone to school with Julie for three years in High School and I knew her brother, Nick, well. From what I knew of her, was an innocent girl who was very smart and talented. However, she was brought up in a bubble. She becomes a revolting teenager that makes a mistake in a city where mistakes are hard to die down. She was brought up to believe that she can get away with anything. And although, I don't believe her life should be ruined she should be taught a lesson that just because Daddy has millions doesn't mean you have a get out of jail free card.
