NYU Freshman Busted For Dealing Drugs

2004_04_nyupotbust.jpg

NYU spokesman John Beckman is the hardest working man in university communications these days. What with yesterday's news of the NYU student living in the library's basement, not to mention the many suicides this past school year, did he really need to have a freshman arrested for dealing pot? Of course, a college student selling drugs is much more understandable than living in the library, but it definitely lacks that unfelonious charm. Julia Diaco, a freshman from Rumson, NJ, was apprehended at a St. Marks apartment building, with "several ounces of high grade pot and a scale" on her, according to Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau. Diaco was also dealing pot and other hallucinogens from her NYU dorm, Hayden Hall. The Daily News emphasizes that Diaco's family lives in a "castle-like mansion" in the same town as Bruce Springsteen, her family was "powerful" - with her dad a "big wheel" in construction - and that Diaco was "headstrong and always well-dressed." Hmm, Daily News, try to spell it out a little more, okay? The other great thing about the Daily News's coverage are the quotes from suitemates:
Diaco suite mate who declined to give her name said "it was pretty obvious what she was doing" and that "she had a lot of customers."
"The phone calls she made were really loud," the student said.
Another suite mate said, "I just noticed lots of people walking in and out all the time."
The first suite mate said the floor's resident assistant had warned Diaco "to stop before she was found out."
It's both a "Ha!"" and "Yikes, that resident assistant is going to go down!" if that last statement is true. Unless NYU has a "one strike and you're out" policy we don't know about. And Ask Gothamist pondered the ethics of eavesdropping on what roommates say on the phone.

most of u are pretty freakin dumb....first off, rfh is not really that much of a party skool compared to the skoolz round here....we are all sheltered motherf***ers. second of all, some reporters are really annoying with tryin to juice up the story by using names like bon jovi and springsteen. they dont matter unless she was selling to them!

  • What a moron, but a hot looking moron, i'd hit it.

Rich white kids are stupid dumb lol ;op

Being from the Rumson area I hate to say that I am not surprised, but going to school with the Diaco family I am surprised to hear the one of them would do this. I think the media is a little too soprano happy. Just because you are rich with an italian last name does not make you a mobster.

It would be silly to say that drugs have not affected high school/college aged teens. I have seen several people in our area with problems that do go unforseen, but I am sure that that occurs anywhere. I am just happy there is one less supplier out there to affect our area, and that she is safe... I only reminds me of what happened at the carnegie deli. That girl is dead.

All i can say is this shit is crazy. I used to do gymnastics with her, god ddaamnn

Don't worry about jailtime for Julie -- she's white AND rich. Black teenagers are over 40 times more likely than white kids to serve jailtime on drug offenses.

Growing up, I was in the same grade as her older brother. I remember Julia a little bit. What I remember was a very cute and sweet young girl. I wasn't really close to anyone in their family, but they were always really nice people from what I saw. Being 18 and at your first year in college is life changing and can easily get out of control. It can happen to anyone, no matter where you come from or how much money you do or dont't have. I hope that Julia will get a second chance and that her and her family will get through this ok.
