Clean Streets

The city is happy to announce that a "record number" of streets and sidewalks are "acceptably clean," according to a report. The first quarter of 2004 had 90% of city street pass "cleanliness standards," compared with the 71% that passed in 1975 (the funniest thing is that acceptably cleans means a few scraps can be on the ground). Of course, some say the ratings are not truly indicative of the streets, since many trashcans are overflowing, but the Mayor's office claims the same criteria was used in 2004 as used in 1975. Maybe back in 1975 there were much lower expectations. Or maybe the street-observers today saw cigarette butts outside bars, just considered that collateral damage and ignored it. Same goes for dog poo - it's organic, it'll wash away, etc.

More about alternate side of street parking, which, of course, is due to street cleaning.

That street looks pretty clean. Just a little spray paint on the wall, to make it interesting. That isn't the kind of "dirty" that bothers me.

  • i think those scraps are dragged away by the rats before the inspectors can get there.

no f'n way that 90% of streets are acceptably clean

nyc should take a page out of london's book - i was just there & was amazed how clean that city is

they have these little machines that literally scrub the streets & sidewalks in the early am - not like those big, bulky behemoths we have in this city that pretend to brush the streets...

  • Dog Poop Brigade

As someone who grew up in NYC, I can honestly say this study is a load of poop. There is more dog crap on sidewalks in recent years than ever and corner trash cans are overflowing no matter where I go. Not to mention the level of graffiti is noticably up too. Maybe the tourist areas are clean, but for the rest of us it ain't.
