Breaking News: Jerry Orbach Films His Last Scenes as Lennie Briscoe

Gothamist can only call it fate. We decided to go for a run in Riverside Park this morning when we noticed some film equipment near the Boat Basin, which is somewhat odd since it's Saturday. A police officer said that Law & Order was filming. Hello!

2004_04_lofilming2.jpg

Then we noticed our friend, Bill Klayer, who let us know that Jerry Orbach was filming his last scenes on the show - in fact, this was the scene that Detective Lennie Briscoe tells Detective Ed Green that he's leaving the 2-7 (27th Precinct). Then they would go back to the soundstage and film Detective Briscoe clearing out his desk. Gothamist got a little choked up, but got it together to run back home to retrieve a camera.

Production assistants tried to get joggers, bikers, and other passers-by to quiet down during filming.

2004_04_lofilming3.jpg

When they finished shooting, some people associated with Riverside Park brought Jerry a cheesecake. He posed for a picture with them...

2004_04_locheesecake.jpg

...then took a piece of cake...

...for the car ride back to the soundstage. (If you look closely, you'll see Jesse L. Martin in the back of the car - Jerry rides shotgun, natch.)

Bye, Jerry and Jesse.

Gothamist's visit to the set of Law & Order and Evening of Law & Order, a NY Times Talk with Jerry Orbach, L&O producer Dick Wolf, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, and attorney Bruce Cutler. And very related, a CNN article about Law & Order addiction - thanks to everyone who emailed Gothamist about this, and, yes, we're looking to start a Law-n-Ordaholics Anonymous group - plus the great Village Voice piece about trying to give up Law & Order for Lent.

In the season finale of "Criminal Intent" which played May 21, 2007, Mike Logan talks about dreaming of Lenny telling him, "I'm not dead, Mike," only to wake and find that Lenny is still dead.

It was a touching and unexpected scene. I still miss Jerry/Lenny. Certainly the franchise has not been the same without him.

Thanks for the photos and keeping this page up, gothamist.com.

I loved Jerry Orbach when he did Law & Order and Beauty and the Beast. My mom said Patrick loves Law & Order especially the ones with Jerry Orbach. I wish that I was on Law & Order. So I'm sorry for you when Jerry died. How did he get cancer?

    Love Patrick Maloney

I am deeply heart-broken of the passing of such a fantastic and versatile actor: Jerry Orbach. His charactor on Law & Order MADE the show and was the primary reason I started watching it faithfully. Jerry, you will fondly be remembered and will forever be cherished and live in my heart. Sweet dreams forever, dear friend...

  • Chris

I can't believe that he's gone. He was the heart and soul of Law & Order. It will Never be the same, and I don't think that I will ever watch it again. The Good Old days are behind us. Thanks Jerry for everything. Every Law & Order fan will miss you. Take care, Lennie.

  • Barb Dunigan

I have loved Law and Order for more years than I realize. I loved Jerry Orbach - he had "IT" I was so looking forward to his new show, and was shocked and devastated when I learned that he had passed away, and apparently had been sick for 10 yrs.. I wonder what type of treatment (if any) he had been receiving those 10 yrs. I am a Law and OrderAHolic for sure, but will miss Jerry the most.

  • Cate

I found a chatroom by yahoo and it had Law & Order....I waited and waited for someone to come into that room so that I could "chat" with them about the show.....:-( no one ever did!!!! Why???? It really made me feel like I was the only one...then I discovered this page where so many people have expressed themselves....couldn't at least one of you have joined me in conversation about our fave show.

    Cate from Australia

  • Beachbunnync

Hello my name is Beachbunnync and I am a Law and Ordaholic.

I miss Jerry so much from his broad fatherly way on Dirty Dancing to even a Cop with Stephen Stegal Out for Justice. He took roles and you really thought this guy walks the walk and talks the talk. I guess The Lord above needed more Law and Order Now then Ever, Huhhhh.

  • Cate

    Hi From Australia,

I'm really sad that Jerry was leaving L&O....but now I'm even sadder to find out that he's died...was happy to see that he was going to be on another show....but now.... :-(

What I can't believe is that I've been watching the show for sooo long and it as well as it's spinoffs are my fave....

Well all I can say is that Jerry will be sadly missed...my thoughts are to his family and friends and to us...his adoring fans....you're still in our hearts Jerry

  • p

I am speechless. Jerry was one of my favorite characters on Law and Order. His character's dry wit and constant sarcasm as an officer of the law was beyond reproach. I will so miss him. I hope that his family knows just how much he will be missed. He was and shall be a great actor. My best to all who knew and admired him.

It's so touching to see how many other people felt the way I did about Mr. Orbach! I thought I must be in the minority--because I loved the man for his talent--but obviously not!

Of course, his departure from the show left me depressed and confused, but now we understand better what prompted his decision to leave.

I remember so well Det. Greene's reaction when Lennie told him he had "put in his papers".

"What!?!" "Damn, Lennie!" My reaction exactly.

And I mean EXACTLY! I said the same words, in the exact same tone, at the exact same time! I'll NEVER forget that!

God, Jerry, how you will be missed--by me as well as many other people apparently!

I would love to see them bring Chris Noth back, permanently if possible. He had damn well better be present if the show does a tribute episode or shows scenes of Lennie's funeral.

By the way, all these people posting comments who claim to be such huge fans of Law and Order and of Mr. Orbach: The least you should be capable of is spelling the man's name correctly. That goes for the character, too.

  • DAWN

LENNIE BRISCOE/JERRY ORBACK WAS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER ON LAW AND ORDE. I THOUGHT HIM LEAVING LAST YEAR WAS BAD....NEVER MIND HIM DYING! LENNIE/JERRY YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS AND MY GOD BLESS YOU AND KEE YOU SAFE! YOU WILL BE GREATLY MISSED!

  • Roberta Fox

I am so-o shocked! He was one of the very best. I will miss him dearly. He was as good off camera as he was on camera. A genuinely lovely man. My tears are for all of us left behind...he has gone on to his reward. God Bless & Keep You dear man.

(I always tell my husband, "Lennie/Jerry can put his shoes under my bed anytime.") I love you Jerry.

I loved watching Jerry in Law and Order and was stunned today to hear of his death. I am in tears as to the loss of such a great actor at only 69 years of age.

  • M Carella

DO NOT POST:If I am reading the notes right, I was surprised to see that you credited my comments for Mr. Ohrbach to someone called SAMMy comments begin : FAREWELL DEAR FRIEND yet my name is credited to the following remarksIt appears that signals got crossed in the posting.DO NOT POST THIS MESSAGE

  • Lee and Jessica Miller

I wanted to add my two cents. To the page masters, this is a lovely page and I've enjoyed being able to see the pictures of Mr. Orbach. To Jerry's family, we can't tell you how sorry we are for your loss. We will remember his characters always and thanks to television, Jerry will live forever and delight fans for generations to come. But even in saying that, it's hard to choke back the tears.

  • BILLIE CAMERON

Have only just found out about Jerry/Lenny's passing. I have yet to fathom it. I saw the rerun night before last of him leaving Law & Order and I was sad all over again, but like so many thousands of his fans, was looking forward to his new spin-off. He was kinda like a family

member. Actually I spent more time with him than

anyone else I know. I think the last time I felt shock like this was when Diana was killed. It is quite unbelievable, I didn't know he was sick.

Well, to his wife and children, my heart goes out to them at this terrible time and hope that they

find the peace in knowing how much he was admired

    and loved.

    Bye Lenny, you were magic.

  • M.Carella

Farewell dear friend. Though we never met, Jerry, I and all members of my family have cherished the times we spent together on the TV during your Law and Order daily shows and holiday marathons. We looked forward to all holidays to see you and spend time with you. You will be truly missed. With abiding affection, may you rest in eternal peace and entertain those you have gone on to meet with your songs and tales of Law and Order. R.I.P.

  • Sam

My mother and I were filled with sadness when we heard the news that Mr. Orbach had passed. We had spent many hours consumed in his acting paradise. He gave us his best and now we give him our best. R.I.P. WE LOVE YOU!!!

We also send our love to his family. He touched us in so many ways, and is loved by millions.

    Gods Speed and Love

  • Monica

My heart is breaking. One of the most versatile actors of stage and screen has died and we didn't even know he was dying. I'm not ready to let him go. I'm still reeling from his stealth departure from L&O. He was getting treatment for his prostate cancer and continued to film his new L&O series. How can he be gone?????

Jerry Orbach was one of those rare performers whose talents leaped from stage, screen or television and always left us wanting more. We cared about his L&O character because he WAS Lenny Briscoe. He WAS Harry, the recurring character he played on Murder She Wrote.

He was one of my favorites. You will be SO missed, Jerry.

  • Ed Sobol

    Lenny---Jerry,

My heart goes out to your family on your passing. You have made my days, watching you on Law and Order.

In Dirty Dancing, looking at the fatherly image you portrayed, made me a fan for life.

Jerry Orbach- May you rest in peace knowing your fans, pray for you.

  • Missy

REST IN PEACE JERRY, LENNIE, GO WITH THE ANGELS. YOU'LL BE MISSED.

  • Kris Odel

    Dear everyone,

Jerry has passed away about an hour ago. Its my hope that his is a restful and peaceful eternity.

Love to all of his fans,

    Kris Odel

  • Tim Hanselman

    I will miss you Lenny.

    Rest in Peace

  • YooHoo

Guess it doesn't matter now, he's dead. Guess he knew it was comming since he was never open to disscussion on how bad the cancer was or how the treatment was going.

  • Dr. Selman A. Berger

Jerry Orbach will be missed. His performances were very realistic, as though he had been a NYC policeman for 30 years. May you rest in peace and may people have everlasting memories of you.

  • Kyle Durr

Such a shame to hear of Jerry's passing. He was a great actor and will be missed. Fortunately we can still see him regularly on Law & Order reruns. God bless you Jerry.

  • IRVING

Soy de Mexico DF y crecí con la ley y el orden, y hoy estoy en estado de shock... sin orbach acaba la ley y el orden para mi, el era el alma de la seria junto a sam... Gracias Jerry

  • susiemae

I see this as an end to the law and order show. Whoever was responsible for getting rid of jerry orbach went about it in a very sneaky way. Get him to leave then say he has a spin off , of his character, then it isn't picked up. So now what no job for jerry. What a payoff for a man who has kept this show going even through the changes in other personell. Stabbed in the back and he isn't even there to solve the murder

  • Jlynn

Jerry is the reason I am so completely hooked on this show. I turn it on everyday and thankfully it runs back to back. Yes, I do have a life, but it's so much better with L & O on in the background.

  • david langford

TO JERRY THANX FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF LAW AND ORDER I LIVE IN TASMANIA AUSTRALIA A NIGHT DOSENT GO PAST THAT I DONT WATCH YOU AND SAM WATERSON YOU BOTH ARE THE BEST GOOD LUCK JERRY I WILL MISS YOU

  • Gia

I'm watching the show right now! I love Law & Order. I have been watching the show since it has been on the air. I love Lenny Briscoe/Jerry Orbach. The show is not going to be the same without him (very saaad face, pouting lips and all that...) No more Lenny humor. WWAAAAAAAAA!!! I think it's awful that Lenny won't be on the show anymore. But I am happy for Jerry and wish him the best in the future and lots of peace and happiness. YOU'RE THE MAN JERRY!

  • NBrown

I am from Detroit, MI and I watch law and order ever chance I get and I just love each and every show which I have seen a thousand and one times, I was really surprise when I heard that lennie(Jerry Orback) was leaving the show but I sure hope that law and order wll come back in the fall and still be the best cop show that I have watch in a long time, I could go on but,I just want to say that everybody on the shows SUV,CI,and law and Order does a great job of entertaining the public and I just want to say thank-you.

  • Loreen

LENNY IS AN EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD EVERY WED NIGHT FOR 12YRS..I LOVE YOU LENNY,I'LL MISS YOUR SNID REMARKS AND YOUR SEXY SMILE..OK WHO;S NEXT?

  • Candie

Wow! I can't believe you saw the last episode with Jerry Orbach being filmed, how awesome! He is so amazing and it kills me that he and I won't be meeting up for our weekly "date" anymore. Dick Wolf can bite me, no one will ever be able to fill the shoes of such a great actor. Not to mention that they gave him a whopping 30 seconds at the end of the show to say Good Bye?? How rude considering the monumental difference he has made to L&O. I hope they keep their promises and he shows up on the spin off.

  • Jerry Orbach, thank you so much for being a great actor. I have admired your talent for so long. As the character, Lenny, you really made the audience feel frustration, sympathy, compassion and concern for the victims as well as the police personnel on L&O. Your character retired on the show, but I (we, your fans) hope that you have not retired. I hope to see you in upcoming films and shows and of course I will always see you in my livngroom while I watch some of your past works. Thanks for lots of things, but mostly thanks for being you.

  • Jan

Jerry Orbach was a great asset to the cast as the weather- and world-beaten detective and will be missed. However, his reported planned-for replacement, Dennis Farina, should fill the part well. Mr. Farina was a Chicago police officer. As long as the "Law and Order" writers do not try to mold Mr. Farina into a Orbach-like character it should be a good fit.

  • Katie

Jerry is and always will be a class act. He was so much fun to watch and now we will have him in reruns. My husband just doesn't understand why I just have to watch them over and over.

  • Kathy

Jerry deserved several Emmys. He was a class act.

Jerry Orbach is one of my favorite actors. He is so smooth, and unpredictable in what he says. he is a passionate actor and everytime I watch L&O he makes me feel like he is a real cop. One of my favorite episodes (there are so many)was when his daughter was testifying against her boyfriend and then she was found dead. When he went to the site where she was found dead, he grieved so bad, I felt that pain.

I am going to miss him terribly. I will keep on watching it just so I can see him in the reruns. "Don't go to far Jerry, think about making guest appearances, Asst. Jack McCoy needs you!!!!!!!

  • Ira

Jerry Orbach will be missed greatly, a great actor whose shoes are unfillable. But I do look forward to Dennis Farina joining the cast....another great tough guy actor, who can play a cop or mobster, and with a gritty, earthy tone. Long live L&O!!!!!

Always loved the show and especially Lenny.

Sorry to hear you are leaving Jerry. Your wit and charm made the show so great.

Im from Brooklyn originally and the humor really is so warm and funny.

    We will all miss you.

  • DefiantMallard

If all else fails, the show is being released in single-season packages on DVD. They sell for about $40 per season, I think....

  • DefiantMallard

Jerry Orbach as Det. Lenny Briscoe, NYPD 27 and Sam Waterston as Deputy (Assistant?) District Attorney Jack McCoy Are the heart and soul of Law & Order.

Jack was the "Law" and Lenny was the "Order." I don't expect that bringing in Dennis Farina, fine actor that he is, will be quite the same as when we got Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) at the 4077th (M*A*S*H) after Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) left. Quite the opposite, I imagine....It'll be like Potter was there all along, and Henry came in during a later season.

What I'm trying to say eloquently, but not succeeding, I suspect, is this:

    LENNY!!! DON'T GO!!!!!!

  • kerry

The show will not be the same with out you. At least I still have the reruns. Jerry, your the best! I will be looking forward to your future work. ther had better be lots of guest apperiences. Thanks again

  • Lesley

We love you Jerry. Thankyou so much for the fabulous entertainment you have given us, and please come straight back to tv or we will probably curl up in the foetal position and lose all will to go on.

Best wishes to you. What a guy.

  • Pam

Although I will miss Jerry Orbach and am sorry the other show did not make the line up it is still just a show. Sorry I did not cry at the last show but I have found myself playing his CDs more often. I have seen pictures of Mr. Orbach and his wife and in every one they look so happy to be together. I hope he enjoys what ever he has planed for his life and he has a chance to use his wonderful singing voice. That is a talent he has that has been very underused. God Bless and live forever.

  • Lynn

We watch Law and Order, also all the reuns and there are lots of them. My favorites have been with Jerry Orbach. But I liked him in anything, even Murder She Wrote. But how many other Detectives do you now who are approaching 70 still at work. He needs some time for himself. But we sure will miss you, Jerry. God be with you. Lynn

Up here in Canada my husband and I are huge L&O fans, I tape the show when my husband is on the road. We were so unbelievably sad to hear Jerry ws leaving the show. We hope he turns up on the new L&O, but we wish him the best whatever he does. We love you, Jerry!

  • Cashmereus

I am so glad we had this time with you Jerry Orbach AKA Lenny Briscoe-just to cuff man or two. Seems we just got started comes the time you have to say farwell. You are the sole reason I watch Law & Order. I enjoyed your quips/remarks-they made the program. Filling your shoes will be difficult-God Bless You Jerry!!!!

  • Claudia S.

Law and Order without Lenny Briscoe is like the night sky with no stars, Thanksgiving with no turkey dinner... Replace him, impossible. He was the backbone of Law and Order. There is no replacing him whoever the actor is they choose. If I find I can watch without his character, it will never be the same. His one-liners are one of kind and his only.

  • Hank Williams

I started watching "Law and Order" because although I don't notrmally watch police shows, I enjoyed it. Then Jerry Ohrbach came aong and I got absolutely hooked! I don't knw when I have enjoyed a character and a show as much as him. I am SO glad ,however, that he wasn't killed off at the end and there exists a chance to see him again. He's an A-1 actor and I will miss Lennie Briscoe a LOT!

  • SHARON TOWNS

THANK YOU JERRY ORBACH, YOU HAVE BEEN GREAT! I HAVE LOVED YOU AS LENNY BRISCOE ON THE SHOW. AND I DO BELIEVE DENNIS FERINA WILL BE A LOVELY TRADE TO STAND IN YOUR PLACE. I HAVE FOLLOWED DENNIS FERINA SINCE CRIME STORY, AS WELL AS WITH A FEW OTHER MOVIES. DENNIS GREAT TO HAVE YOU ON BOARD. LAW AND ORDER KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO. THE SHOW IS STILL GREAT!! FROM AN ADMIRIER OF THE SHOW. SHARON TOWNS!! BUFFALO, NEW YORK IS IN THE HOUSE!!

  • Gummanur Manjunath

    Hi,

I feel sad that Jerry is leaving L&O; I just can't believe it. He is a fine actor and carries a lot of dignity.I can't imagine L& O without Jerry. If he is leaving for personal reasons, I wish him well and if for health reasons, may God bless him with good health. I wish him all the luck. I hope he will be replaced with an equally good actor.

  • brett

i started watching law and order on tnt as reruns and have evolved into the whole law and order scene as a huge fan...i remember dennis farina from crimestory and the original manhunter and i think he is a great choice to replace lennie..best of luck to the new series which i will be checking out and try to work richard brooks back in a guest role every now and then...thanks

  • Jim Resseguie

I can not believe that Jerry Orbach is leaving Law & Order, the show will just not be the same. It was a fantastic run and I will miss him. There are few actors I feel I have come to know thru their work. Jerry made you feel that there was a lot of him in his roles. The only other actor I ever felt put himself into his roles as well was John Wayne. That puts you in good company Jerry. Thanks for everything, take care, and we will look for you.

  • Christian Rubio

I could always count on the nights that I would see Jerry Orback in Law and Order. He had become a staple in my life, something that I always took as a given. I had become so accustomed to seeing him that when I heard he was leaving I felt an ache in my heart as If I were losing a friend. I thank god I have the comfort of knowing that he will make guest appearances. Jerry I will miss you greatly and thw show will not be the same without you. You are the greatest!!

  • kelly

when i found out jerry orback was leaving i was in tears. lenny always reminds me of my late father and i can not imagine watching my favorite show without him.

  • craig

I was only recently lucky enough to find this [web]site, and all the information; but I view, refer, to it always.

I am saddened by Jerry Orbach's / Lenny's leaving the show, but.... trust/hope that in the usual style the show itself will carry on just as professionally and wonderfully as always. But, a true question here: Who can possibly replace Lenny as the 'bon mot' sparring partner w/ [M.E.] Rogers, in the morgue? Their exhanges constantly entertain and joyfully amuse me.

  • Ingrid

Jerry - Lenny - I know a lot of characters have been replaced, but I just couldn't believe my eyes and ears when I heard that last night was your last episode. I know every single episode of L & O - from the very first year all the way through and every other cast memeber change has been a bit tough but this one - Ask my family - I cried before the episode even aired. I hope you are healthy and just need a break because I remember in an interview once upon a time you stated that you loved that job - filmed in New Yord - steady and quality work. If you are ill, God Bless and if not - you better show your face at the DA's office at least once per month! If it's Broadway - I'm sure they're glad to have ou back.

  • diane fournier

Since Jerry Orbach has retired from Law and Order and his last episode was April 24, 2004 I hope that Dick Wolf will try and get Benjamin Bratt back or Chris Noth. I would prefer Benjamin Bratt and hope that no other person is chosen. (if Benjamin Bratt or Chris Noth is not available I hope he will consider Peter Hermann, fiance of Mariska Hargitay.

They are the best I have seen on Law and Order.

    Thank you,

    Diane Fournier

  • Liz

Lenny was one of the best characters ever!

    Jerry, you're the best.

  • Marlene

LOSING LENNY BRISCO IS TOTAL DEVASTATION. I NOT ONLY WATCH HIS PRESENT SHOW, BUT ALL THE RE-RUNS OVER AND OVER AND OVER. NO ONE CAN REPLACE HIM. LOTS OF LOVE FROM THIS GROUP AND ALL GOOD WISHES TO YOU, LENNY/JERRY. HEAR YOU MAY BE GOING ON BROADWAY - I'LL BE IN THE FRONT SEAT!!

  • FRED

I hope the producer of the show gets a gazillion e-mails and maybe he'll bring back Lenny

I have to say I LOVE Jerry Orbach! I have been a die hard Law & Order fan forever. I cried last night knowing that this was the last episode he was in. I have followed Jerry from Golden Girls to Murder, she wrote to now. Won't be the same without ya!!!Great pics.

I just saw the final episode and am having a hard time keeping down the tears. From the first time I heard the OCR of the Fantasticks with Jerry as El Gallo I have adored and respected him as a performer, and rejoiced to see him as Lumiere (or rather, hear him) and as Baby's father in Dirty Dancing, but it was as Lennie Briscoe that he truly stole my heart. His rough-hewn, flawed cop with the heart of gold became the ideal for me of all detectives, the everyman of NY who toils on and speaks for all the cops out there tirelessly doing their jobs for little recognition, injecting everything with a wry wit. What a gift you have been to TV, Mr. Orbach. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will dearly miss you!! Thank God for TNT reruns!!

I was disapointed with tonight's episode. It looked like it wasn't planned out. I thought there would be a big farewell ending to Lennie.

    Shame on L&O

Jerry Orbach is a brilliant actor. One of the first times I saw him was in FX the Movie his role was very smart and very funny. ie: Jerry is surrounded in a house and worried about his pacemaker:) I'm gonna miss you on L&W but It won't be the last I hope

Lenny is law & order, I can't believe that they let him go off the show. Thank you for all the great memories and I wish you the best.

The first time I say Jerry Orbach on Murder she Wrote, I thought then, This is the sexiest man on TV. He became my Randolph Scott and Alan Ladd (the real men I dream about!!) After all these years of watching him on Law & Order my opinion never swayed. He just gets better as he gets older! Like a nice fine mellowed wine!!! I still tingle when I watch him on L & O. I just love me "some Jerry Orbach". Wherever he goes on TV, I'll find him there too!!

Man oh Man....Lenny and Law and Order are the only reason that I have a television. Lenny is like seeing our local police officer on tv. He just played that part so real. Law and Order is the only show on tv that does have that soap opera feel.

  • Laura

You've outlasted them all, Lenny. May your future be as bright as Lumiere's (Beauty and the Beast, remember?) flickering candle!
