The big expose in the Post today is not some Page Six gossip bit but rather that the creator of Yankee Hater gear is from New Jersey. Curt Schilling made waves when he wore a Yankee Hater hat (red hat with Yankees' insignia) at a hockey game, which was the fruit of Mike Moorby's idea to send some hats to the Red Sox. Moorby told the Boston Herald, "I just thought there were a lot of people who really despise the Yankees. It was just an idea, and I ran with it." While this continues to fan fire in the debate about whether good things come from New Jersey, Gothamist has a feeling that the "A-Rod is an A-Hole" shirt will be a hit even with Yankee fans if he continues his subpar (for a $250 million) performance. And $1 of every Yankee Hater purchase goes to The Jimmy Fund.
Tonight, Yankees vs. Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Two people who would probably enjoyed some Yankee Hater couture: Lockhart Steele and Eliot Shepard.

I was in Boston last weekend, looking around because I am planning to move there soon. We were near the stadium, and the sheer volume of Yankee-Hater schwag was staggering. I've been to Fenway before, and I've been deluged with Sox gear, but this was the first time I experienced it as someone who will be moving there. Quite surreal and uncomfortable. ;-)
Yeah those Bostonites have a seething hate for the Yanks. Yes I hate the Yankees too, but I don't think I can push it up to their level. Boston is in a league of their own.

When I first moved to boston, I thought they only sold "Yankees Suck" tees when the Sox were playing the Yankees. I soon realized that they sold those shirts before every game. When they played the Mets, though, I think just as many Mets fans bought the "Yankees Suck" tees as the Sox fans.

I lived in Boston for 5 1/2 years after college. At first I thought it was kinda cute and it didnt bother me. But after all that time, the constant NY hating (and it extends far beyond baseball, Boston has a really bad inferiority complex re NY about everything) really started to get to me. I now HATE Boston. I guess they won. Thats the sad part. I am now trying to reverse their evil by not caring and enjoying it as quaint, but its hard to ignore how violently stupid they are.

Say what you will about Yankee fans, but Boston fans are truly obsessive in their dislike. I've heard many a story ranging from radio callers claiming they would kill their wives for a BoSox World Series victory and other such garbage, but what really illustrates this best for me is a story from my friend who went to school at Tufts: he was at an Allman Brothers concert in Boston, when all of a sudden in the middle of the show the place broke out into a rousing chant of "Yankees suck!" At a freaking Allman Brothers concert. I don't even know what to make of that.

My dad had a button (now long gone, sadly) and another person I knew had a t-shirt, but they were in the same font & coloring as the shirt above. I agree that it seems that Red Sox fans are more obsessed with the Yankees and Yankee fans, but it might just be more public, and in my opinion Red Sox fans are more bitter. You will get fans that disparage the other team on each side and the Yankees are definitely more of a target, because of their history and extremely high profile especially over the last 8 yrs or so. One of the things that make this a great rivalry is the passion of the fans.
If you haven't figured it out, I'm a Yankees fan, but I don't despise the Red Sox or Red Sox fans, I married one. You will find idiot's on both sides and it's idiotic to generalize an entire city or fan base, each has its good and bad. There's is nothing wrong in following, supporting and being proud of your team, but it crosses a line when you more interested in the downfall or hatred of another team. I'm not saying that you can't root against a team, but unchecked, blatant hatred is something else. I'm not just talking about Red Sox fans, it applies to all. I have heard many Yankee fans or Mets fans (I live in the NE) make such remarks. I find it amazing how people will bash certain players, only to love them if they happen to come to your team. Almost all Yankee fans criticize Pedro, but they would be the first to sing his praises if he played for the Yankees next year. Red Sox fans would be extolling A-Rod if he had gone to Boston, with Yankee fans cursing him. Most passionate Red Sox fans I know, disliked Paul O'Neil because of his dugout antics, yet they rallied around Millar and "cowboy up". It all depends on perspective.

The Devil Rays could not just fly out and leave this to their families to appease the cowering Yankees. That the Yankees could blow the dust off the rule book and call for a "forfeit" under the circumstances was as cowardly and insensitive an act as I can think. The most cowardly being what Bin Laden did to New York on 9/11. How interesting that the New Yorkers are shown pity and help and millions of dollars of aid for their 9/11 devastation, but when it happens to someone else, they get out the rule book show what assholes they are.

I live in Texas and I promise I hate the Yankee's as much as anyone from Boston. Fact is everyone I know who watches any baseball in Texas (i.e. Astros or Rangers) hates the yankee's just the same as me. That pretty much shoots down that theory about Boston having an inferiority complex. Most people hate the yankees period. My favorite poll ever on espn.com is rate your most hated yankee's 1-16.
