Proud Queen Mary 2

The Queen Mary 2 docks in New York City today, after being delayed by storms yesterday to make its American coming out party. The "\longest, widest and tallest passenger ship" in the world today will be greeted by Mayor Bloomberg and other dignitaries, as well as heightened security from the NYPD. The ship will leave NY on Sunday, after the big Saturday night colorectal cancer fundraiser hosted by Katie Couric. So, for aspiring paparazzi and Gawker Stalkers, the Hudson piers will be the place to be. Of course, the veteran paparazzi know that all sorts of stuff goes down in that 'hood.

The city will be upgrading the NY Passenger Ship Terminal on the Hudson River to a new $150 million facility. In fact, the QM2 will be at Pier 92, which can barely fit the ship. A smaller $20 million facility will be built in Brooklyn during construction; Gothamist wonders if it will turn into a high end residential area after the project.

The boat is seriously HUGE. Or, as The Donald would say, "YOOOOGE."

I watched from Battery Park City. Big boat, indeed, and what a great NY moment to watch it emerge from the fog.

But I gotta say that the best part was the fireboat shooting red, white, and blue water.

sure she's big and fancy and expensive - but she's still a goddamned floating nursing home.

Why wasn't this on the Gothamist events calendar?

Augh!! We're putting the updated information on our event calendar- including the fireworks display on Sunday night!

Cabin prices Start at 1,200??? Floating Nursing Home Indeed.

most of the people who go on cunard cruises are v. v. elderly, looking for a place to spend their twilight years bossing people around and giving youngsters the stink-eye. the average age was around 68. i heard that something like seven people died (of old age) on the QE2 carribean holiday cruise i went on in dec/jan - they even have a morgue on the ship for such occasions! neat-o! i won't soon forget the "new years party" hundreds of aged folks whooping it up...and by "whooping it up" i mean sitting still with a dour expression on.

well you know airliners have a refrigerated space too for people who die in flight? i'm talking LONG flights, like here to tokyo. i mean what are you supposed to do with a dead body? people do die, its what they do.

Woo! Making fun of old people. Classy. Take that, Grandpa! Here's some material for you if you exhaust your current repertoire.
