The NYPD blamed Canadians Annalise Spencer and Deirdre Barkhousefor swimming in the Central Park Reservoir on Monday. The Canadian tourists were arrested after they "scaled" the four foot chain link fence around the reservoir in the hot 85 degree weather. Barkhouse told Newsday, "I've competitive swam so I thought, 'Hey, it's a beautiful day.' We had no idea it was illegal." Clearly, four foot high chain link fences with no doors in them mean nothing to Canadians. The two women asked some joggers if it was illegal, and the joggers said they had never seen it before. Lesson #14 here: New Yorkers know everything and know nothing at the same time. Soon, a police helicoptor monitored them from above as a scuba team went in after them. And even though they had to be made an example of (spending the night in jail), the women said they had a great time in NYC, with the police officers pointing out landmarks while they were handcuffed during the ride to the station.
The Central Park Reservoir is a gorgeous place to walk or run, but it never occured to us that one should swim in it. Who knows what is in it? The Central Park Loch Ness monster, perhaps. And Gothamist Weather had a joke about Canada yesterday. Hee.

it's no long a chain-linked fence. it's a beautiful wrought-iron one painted black.
i meant "longer".
The last time I saw someone go in the reservoir they had rocks in their pockets and the police had 2 helicopters and scuba etc on hand to fish out the poor bastard. I don't think his intention was to swim though....
in high school, we used to sneak into the resevoir to smoke joints on the rocks by the water. never went swimming in there tho.
That Reservoir I bet has the Cleanest Water out of any NYC River, Pool, Lake, etc. They WERE supposed to Drain it and make it into a Field. What happened with that?
I don't think i'll drink any Tap water for a while. I'll wait until the guy's Filth Cycles through the system.
our tap water comes from the Ashokan resevoir about 2 hours north from here. the resevoir doesnt serve drinking water for the city, it's a water supply for the park's water needs such as the Pool, the Loch and the Harlem Meer.
oops, forgot my r's in reservoir
and PS -- the Ashokan resevoir is the reason our tap water is cloudy and we all have Brita filters.
New Jersey Residents spiked our drinking water, thats why its Cloudy. Its payback for years of storing Toxic Waste from NY there.
I can't believe they sent out a helicopter and a scuba diver. I mean the rez isn't even really a rez - it's only some sort of emergency backup. So, to stop these 2 girls from swimming in what is basically a pond they send out a helicopter and a scuba diver? The precinct house is right there across the transverse on the south side. Some cop couldn't go over and just say: get out already?
that is pretty absurd. our tax money hard at work for homeland security i suppose.
I remember back in 1999 or 2000 there was someone diving in the reservoir, retrieving items thrown in over the years as a kind or archelogical exercise. Nothing remarkable reported, though.
You call America the land of the free and you can't even take a dip in a pond?
It wasn't as if they scaled a fence with barbed wire or razors on it...they hopped a fence which was quite easily accessible.
Yes the city wasted a humongous amount of tax dollars on the overkill of police enforcement ... maybe if someone had the brains to check it out first and call for backup... that wouldn't have happened.
But hey...isn't this America? The Land Of The Free?
