The Rivalry Begins Anew

This weekend brings us the first meeting this season of the Yankees and the Red Sox, in a four game series that any baseball fan can enjoy. The two teams have not met since last October when Aaron Boone ended the ALCS with a home run and when there was an incident between Don Zimmer and Pedro Martinez. Boone and Zimmer are gone, and Martinez is not scheduled to pitch, but the rivalry has only heated up since. During the off season, the Red Sox signed Curt Schilling and tried to trade for Alex Rodriguez, who was eventually acquired by the Yankees, making him the new person to hate.

Scheduled pitching match-ups are Javier Vazquez/Tim Wakefield for tonight's game, Mike Mussina/Curt Schilling tomorrow afternoon, Jose Contreras/Derek Lowe on Sunday afternoon, and Kevin Brown/Bronson Arroyo on Monday morning. After this weekend, the two teams will meet 15 more times, including a three game series next weekend and Yankee Stadium.

  • A-Rod keeps getting boos from the crowd like no other. Man, whatever. Yanks for life.

  • That is:

"I've hated this guy since he left Seattle. Had he stayed, Seattle would have won a World Series by now" AND Hell froze over last winter. And I don't recall beign invited to any snowball fights...

In all seriousness though, I'd not be too hasty to count the Mariner's out either. So far as the Yankees are concerned, they're still my favorite team, I don't care who they "acquire" as long as they consistantly win games, most notably, as long as they consistantly beat the Orioles.

Pay-rod is not the new person to hate. At least not from my standpoint. I've hated this guy since he left Seattle. Had he stayed, Seattle would have won a World Series by now and he would be in the 4th year of a 7 year $177 million contract and still on a yearly contending AL west team. But no, he had to listen to his agent and go with the money knowing full well that there was no way Texas could have fielded a decent team around him with that kind of expense. So, considering that my team (The Mariners) has started the season off on the wrong foot (although don't count them out yet!) This weekend, I will be wearing my Bo-Sox hat in the hopes that they take 3 out of 4 from the Yanks.

But hey, they DID have a groundskeeper scuffle with a relief pitcher and outfielder in the middle of a game, not to mention the whole Pedro/Zim incident. Not too shabby as far as passion goes.

I just read an article where Jeter says it's the best rivalry in sports. Ha! It's not like people get killed over it when the Rangers and Celtics play in Glasgow. Now THAT's a rivalry!

  • Two words: Johnny Damon!

  • doshin

To liberally paraphrase that guy from Sportscenter last night, it's not a rivalry, it's a gang rape!

But there won't be drama from last year. Everyone involved in the tussles last year, Pedro, Rocket, Zim, Garcia and Nelson are all poof, gone.

Yanks take 3 games. Vazquez and Brownie are too good, and Mueller hasn't hit yet and Nomah is still out.
