There was a woman at Gristedes the other day who spent the entire time she was in the grocery store yammering on her cell phone. She stopped at one point to ask an employee where she could find the tuna, and the employee refused to answer the question until the woman got off the phone. She threw a fit. So what gives? When else is it totally inappropriate to be talking on your phone?

Cell phones are a great thing, but there is a time and a place. Most grocery store employees (or food service workers, or even the girl who folds shirts at the Gap) are hard workers and deserve respect. Taking five seconds out of a phone conversation that you could (and probably should) be having at another time is not showing them respect. If your phone rings in a store it's okay to pick it up, but, unless it's an emergency, tell your caller you'll get back to them later. This is especially true if you might need to exchange information. If you're going to ask a clerk a question, at least have the dignity to put the phone down. It's good to be paying attention at check out anyway; items get scanned twice, the cashier needs to know if your card is debit or credit. (And Gothamist once made it home with a jar of spaghetti sauce that we hadn't intended to buy. Which is not to say that cashiers are incompetent, just that it can't hurt to pay attention.)
It's also not polite to have phone conversations when you're: Out to dinner with someone; driving (with your hands-free earpiece, of course) while someone else is in the car; at work speaking loudly within earshot of six other people. Readers, feel free to add others.
Calling your husband to verify that he wanted steak for dinner and not chicken for the third night in a row is one thing; debating the relative merits of Sarah Michelle Gellar's portrayal of Daphne in the Scooby Doo sequel while standing at the check-out is something else entirely.

"yammering" on my cell phone to counter the most despised 45 minutes of my entire week is acceptable. i hate food shopping and i see nothing wrong with using the time "yammering"...about what? I don't give a fuck, just take my mind off the fact that im lugging cheap detergent and cheez its. Talking while checking out / asking directions is unacceptable, agreed.
It's one thing if you're wandering the aisles of a store talking on your phone, but it's another if you're at the counter in an exchange with a clerk. I agree with Erin. Put down the phone for two minutes.
There used to be a hardware store across from the Kips Bay movie theater - I think it's a Dunkin Donuts now - that had a sign near the counter: "No Cell Phone Use at Cashier." I guess they were sick of being treated like an ATM or computer.
Mmmmhmmm I hate it when customers come up to me at my cash talking on their cell phones. Not only do i find it disrespectful, but also, I am there to do my job, and that person isn't letting me do my job.
Gothamist: how sohuld i treat such customers?

I am all for chatting on the cell to kill time, but only if it can remain somewhat private (e.g., on a call while walking to and from the subway - OK. on a call on the bus or other confined space - not OK. My biggest cell phone pet peeve involves people at the gym chatting away obliviously while they complete their 20-30 minutes of cardio. I can understand how a call to your best friend in Cali might make that otherwise unpleasant block of time move a bit faster, but I dont think the (loud) cell talkers at my local NY Sports Club realize that I can hear their entire conversation despite my headphones turned up to the highest possible volume! There is no blocking them out and it ruins my otherwise peaceful "me" time at the gym! A word to all you gym talkers - bring a book or something!
