Daily News on NY Cupcakes

For the love of tiny cakes with frosting on top: The Daily News turns sixteen adults and children into cupcake testers to find the best cupcakes in New York, rating them on a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (lovely). Some of the usual suspects include, Magnolia Bakery, Sage in LIC, Sweet Melissa, Crumbs, Magnolia, Amy Sedaris at Joe, and Polka Dot, but remember, cupcakes are subjective, so don't get bent out of shape if you see your favorite get a low score (Gothamist happens to enjoy sugary frosting, which is eaten last for the very best in head rushes). The winner was Billy's Bakery (184 Ninth Ave.; 212-647-9956), with adults oohing, "That was scrumptious. The icing was perfect. It had the perfect combination of butter, sugar and chocolate." The kids were also enthuastic, though had one suggestion, "I loved it, though if I could make one change, I would do a little less frosting because it took over." Less frosting? Who are these kids? Gothamist must make our way there immediately.

Gothamist on the Times' look at cupcakes. And NY magazine readers chose Magnolisa as their favorite cupcakes, with Amy Sedaris's cupcakes at Joe in second.

I'm so glad Passover is over so I can eat lots of cupcakes! Apparently there is a new bakery on Rivington called Sweet something with great cupcakes...I don't know the name cause I haven't been there yet. Magnolia will always be my favorite but they need to open another branch of it so it's more easily accessible. Thanks for the consistant cupcake posting. Of course, that makes me crave them all day, but I forgive you for that.

I'm a dork as it's right there in the Daily News article - Sugar Sweet Sunshine. What a great name! How can you eat cupcakes and be sad? Impossible.

Still think 'Out Of The Kitchen' on Hudson Street in West Village is a much overlooked but fantastic place to buy your cakes.

You MUST go to Billy's. Nuff said. :-)

Hi Jen...What about Buttercup bakery on 2nd Avenue??

Buttercup is a spinoff/splinter of Magnolia. It is MUCH better in my opinion - the cupcakes tend to be fresher and there is a wider selection of flavors.

I do feel Magnolia is a bit overrated. Too sweet and too often slightly stale :P

Cupcake Cafe is my current favorite...

All of these are good...BUT...Little Pie Company's "icing in the middle" cupcakes take the prize!

I second the Out of the Kitchen recommendation. Their cupcakes are the most consistently moist; Magnolia's are dryer than your average lump of sand.

I personally adore the ones at the Cupcake Cafe- why do they never get talked about? soooo yummy...

I Love the cupcakes at Billy's, don't touch them, to much icing for some, take it off with your finger. Try the cake!

Billy's absolutely rocks. Cupcakes are fresh, the icing is just sweet enough and the staff is friendly as heck
