Designating Chelsea Piers as the best range in NYC is a dubious distinction. Understandably, most ranges in a cosmopolitan area can offer only so much.

At CP, the net stops your ball at 200 yards, a bucket starts at $20, you're likely going to have to wait for a "tee time" and you might be hitting from the 4th floor. Also, the teeing machine is nifty and convenient, but prone to jamming.

New Yorkers don't really have much of a choice w/respect to ranges, so we deal with it. The Brooklyn range sounds more like a real range (real grass), but it's not exactly time effective to travel from uptown to Brooklyn just to hit golf balls when you can get to Randall's Island in 15 minutes.

Rachelle: sounds like a bad start ending up with you living in Vegas, building bookie websites, and playing the ponies!

Bethpage Black (there are several courses of varying difficulty at BP) is a stunning public course. Anyone who plays regularly should try to play it at least once. It's never been in better condition and there's nothing like playing on a course before you see it on TV. "Hey, I was in that same spot and I hit it better than that guy!"

The other thing I recommend if you get the chance is to get practice round tickets for the US Open. Lots of people want to go for the actual competition, but having done both, I'll go for the practice rounds every time. Start out on 18 and walk the course backwards. You'll see everyone through the course of the day and unlike on the weekend, you can actually see more than one hole.

oh, betting also makes the antiques roadshow more exciting too.

the weird thing is that i enjoy watching both golf and watching the antiques road show, but betting just kicks it up a notch.
