Own A Little Yankee Stadium!

Yankee Stadium benches

To make room for all the money they need to store for their roster, the Yankees are getting rid of 1,200 seats that were removed in the late '90s (they were installed in 1975). The best part is that the seats will go on sale to the public Monday, April 19, with money going towards the city's general fund. The Parks and Recreation Department has been housing them and Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe says, "If you were there for Reggie Jackson’s three home-run-night against the Dodgers in the 1977 World Series, Dave Righetti’s no-hitter in 1983, or Jeffrey Maier’s catch against the Orioles in 1996 you sat in these seats—they’re a part of New York City sports legacy. Now you can take home some of this excitement and relive these historic moments every day."

Details:
- One hundred sets of three seats; each set on sale for $1,500
- Sale starts at 9AM, Monday, April 19
- Purchase either at CityStore in the Municipal Building or by calling 311 (311 is so versatile!) or 212-NEW-YORK if you're outside of NY
- Three hundred sets of seats will be auctioned later this year

If anyone buys them, let Gothamist know how much gum is under the seats and if the seats are sticky from beer and ketchup.

More from the Parks Department.

Years ago Korvettes sold original Yankee stadium seats that were ripped out during the renovation of Yankee Stadium in the early 70's. They sold for 39.95. Being that we were Mets fans my old man only wanted to buy one. They are now worth thousands of dollars and Korvettes is long gone. The seats being sold now aren't even originals. Looking back I should have put my old man in a choke hold and forced him to buy one hundred of them. I could have bought a mansion in Jersey or a one bedroom apartment in Manhattan today... I still have the original seat.
