I think the serval was being kept in the basement while his owners were away - the article said Tigger got the run of the house when the owners were there. They were probably worried he would be able to unlock and open the doors.

Okay, the part of that article that got my attention was that they apparently keep it in their basement. Call me picky, but a suburban basement strikes me as a poor environment for a 40-pound exotic carnivore.

Servals make excellent pets actually; and they're astonishingly intelligent as well. If you don�t have small children or pet rodents/small animals you'd do well having one. They're illegal in Fairfax VA, and I thought they'd be illegal in Long Island as well but I guess I was wrong. So far as Mr. Yates is concerned I always heard that alligators and crocodiles lived in the NYC sewer system, not apartments in Brooklyn(?).
