I don't know about anyone else, but that New York story made me cry. Jeez, maybe it's Friday and I've had a hard week, but, for a moment, I was there

Clearly the best interview published yet. So much insight into NY life, (especially the bit about the culture of competition here, which I've tried so hard to explain to outsiders with limited success,) that I'm sending it to all my friends as an Easter present.

thank you for a wonderful interview. felt good to read it. felt good that it came from someone a little older too. i feel happy, and even more excited to someday find my way to new york than ever before.

Yes, I agree. The best interview published so far. And what a terrific guy, with a passionate and agile mind.

I love New York. And I live in Vermont.

that's a great NY story. I have to forward this to somebody.

Jesus, I feel stupid now. How about interviews with mediocre talents only, from now on, just so I can feel better about myself?

But yeah, best interview yet.

really fantastic - a great start to my friday. thanks clay.

Definitely the best interview. Awesome advice at the end.

I fourth that. Splendid interview/insight.

Clay Shirky is a fucking interesting guy, but I think Bill Blass is the better designer.

wow, that was an awesome interview. clay has now set the bar for every interview going forward.

excellent story about the budweiser.

If Clay Shirky ever finds himself separated and needs $300 for a divorce, I will lend him the money, and then give him my phone number.

What a sexy, sassy brain this man has.

Eat your heart out, Dale Peck. This is what actual insight looks like.

Perfect.

Not only is this the best interview yet, but there is an added bonus for me: Clay Shirky must live next door to me, because I also live directly across from the dolphin. If anyone needs me I will be sitting on my stoop with a printout of his picture waiting for him to walk by so I can congratulate him on being the The Greatest Young Manhattanite(Brooklynite) Interviewee in the History of the World.

This interview is awesome. Clay thanks for sharing your stories and amazing writing.

But... but... Twyla Tharp is _so_ 30 years ago. Chuck Close is not only _so_ 30 years ago, but he sucks and always sucked as a painter. Henry Kravis bought About.com and ruined New York magazine.

Has this man got any cultural references more than 20 years old?

Ellen, can I come wait with you?

Hands down, best interview yet. IM-peccable.

one of the best interviews I have ever read online

Does he have any political aspirations? I'd vote for him for mayor, just for his take on Envy.

Great interview. Except for all of the times I felt like he was talking about me. And was correct.

Being a severely underemployed freelancer, this inspirational interview was just what I needed. Thank you, Clay and Gothamist ...

I can hear my neighbors having sex upstairs while listening to kruder dorfmeister.it`s a really fucking cheesy new york moment .

My god, what a phenomenal interview! I haven't been homesick for a whole year since moving to Tokyo from Manhattan, but hearing from Clay why NYC is so incredible made me terribly homesick, in a good way. Thank you Gothamist!

nice stuff. a little derivative, but nice.

Oh, and in re to an earlier comment, Krucoff/Gothamist have interviewed more mediocre talents. MUCH more mediocre.

I am moving to NY, Definitely. A town that gets people passionate about excellence and papaya on hotdog has to be great.

Clay Shirky is insightful, and probably one of today's 45.

Go Clay!

best interview yet certainly. i love this feature but clay's interview blows everyone else so far out of the water. thanks for that! i will miss new york terribly when i go and it's for the reasons clay loves it and so many more of my own but also because of the brilliant and creative minds here. great reminder to keep the snark level down.

I enjoyed this interview, but I thought it was a little derivative.

I read that this was a really good interview on somebody's blog, so I came here, then I emailed all my friends to read this.

Great man and great story. Best regards from Germany.

When my father went into pension (luckily at that time it was possible when somebody was 50) they decided to go to live in the country.

After 32 years he died and my mother, as a widow living by herself decided to go back to live in the city (closer to the Hospital, just in case...)After a few days she calls me and says; I do not understand the world anymore!

You go on the balcony in front of four big buildings and no one is there.

Once there were hundreds of women chatting and gossiping, may be shouting louder when they wanted to communicate with somebody a little bit farther.

All day long, except when the men came home for meals (which at that time was twice a day), you could always find somebody to chat with.

Nowaday there is the most absolute silence.

Where have all the gossipers gone?

I do not think the world has changed so much. I think the ways of communication have changed.

Now they use the portable phones, they use the Internet. I personally (may be I am old minded) preferred the "shouting world", at least you had conference calls for free, and you didn't need a camera to see the talkers.

In a few minutes you had all the latest news that counted for you. Who was ill, who recovered, what good or bad marks the son or daughter of this and that had got at school, even (but for this you lowered the voice and the gossip had a special delivery, ear to ear) who was the mistress of this or that...

The world was and is exactly the same.

What concerns most of the people is not the War in Iraq (unless you have somebody there) but what your neighbour is doing.

"What did you cook for lunch/ what kind of soap did you use, your laundry looks whiter than mine..."

My mother says "This is not the same world, I hoped so much going back to town"

She doesn't understand she should learn how to use a portable phone or computer and connect to the Net...

Mr. Shirky, that is the social behavior Italian style...

By the way between Yves Saint Laurent and Bill Blass I would choose Gucci.

Patrizia

small error in Q2: "HMTL"

I love New York! Wouldn't make sense not to.
