No Rumble in the Bronx

2004_04_bronx.jpg

The city is cheering about the week without gunshoots in the Bronx that ended on Tuesday. For nine days, there were no shootings in the northernmost borough. Mayor Bloomberg said, "Ten years ago, in the same week, there were 30 [shootings]. Last year, there were five. This year, zero. It is an amazing number." Plus, there hasn't been a murder there since March 12. Police Commissioner Kelley says that clustering police in high crime areas has helped shootings fall 22% so far this year. This is amazing for two reasons: First, it's weird to think it's a big deal that there are no shootings in a borough. Second, thinking about the Bronx, it is interesting that there weren't any shootings. Gothamist hopes for a continued downward trend, but will admit that when we used to drive through the Bronx, we'd think Fort Apache Bronx.

Besides checking out some great Italian and Puerto Rican food in the Bronx, there's the New York Botanical Gardens and the Bronx Zoo. And there's also the Bronx Tourism Council.

When I was in New York back in September 1985 and August 1987 I felt that the City left a lot to be desired. Too many of the buildings there looked neglected, I thought.

I wonder how the City has changed since then? I presume that old buildings have gone and new buildings have gone up. I do believe London's Docklands were "slummy" before the redevelopment. Now the area seems to have Britain's tallest buildings (as opposed to masts) which seem to compete with Downtown Manhattan to some extent. Please read my Guestbook entries in the www.russellphotographic.co.uk website.

Please also read other online articles of mine. I am anxious to bring the to everyone's attention and I do believe the (outgoing) UK Prime Minister has been informed about them. Just visit Google and put DENT RESISTANCE SOLAR or even Jeremy Keller in the search engine to locate them. They are mainly pertaining to dent-resistant bodywork and exploring more of the solar system. Furthermore, on the 23rd of March, Jo Hollis made a video of me talking about them in a studio of BBC Radio Leicester.

Can I just say that as a proud Bronxite I am happy to see we are finally getting some propers. People need to realize that there is life past 161st Street.

I still wouldn’t walk through some parts of Central Park at Night. But this has its Advantages. Not as many go up Central Park beyond 86th Street to 110th in the day anyway. Since I work up there, the noticeable lack of annoying Tourists and Yuppies please me to no end.

Time Square in the early 80's was my favoite Gritty Area. I cant say 70's since I wasn’t around then.

  • New York was pretty bad in the late 70s under the corrupt administration of Koch. Pimps roamed midtown. Central Park was off-limits after sundown. Fort Apache. *sigh* Those were the days. My favorite "gritty urban drama" set in NYC was Nighthawks starring Sly Stallone and Billy Dee Williams.http://kaareundknut.com/reviews/10139...
