Williamsburg Rape and Robbery

Police sketches of suspects

Two women were raped and robbed last night in south Williamsburg. The two 27 year-old women were going back home from an art gallery and were unlocking the door to an apartment building when two men shoved them inside. An hour later, after assaulting, robbing, and threatening them, the men demanded to be taken to the car of one of the victims. One of the women managed to break free, scream and get help, which, NYPD Special Victims Unit Inspector Susan Morley said, "could have possibly saved both their lives."

The police are conducting a manhunt for the two suspects: One is described as a Hispanic male, 25-30 years old, 5'5'-5'6", 130 pounds, with distinctive tattoos (a "cross embedded in a diamond-shaped pattern" on the right chest and the other of an animal near the groin); the other suspect, also a Hispanic male, is described as 23-26 years old, 5'7"-5'8", possibly wearing a do-rag. Details about the location of the attack and art gallery are being withheld.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the suspects to call 1-800-577-TIPS.

While we all feel relatively safe, please remain alert and aware. For more information about self-defense, take a look at the American Women's Self-Defense Association database of instructors as well as the options that come up for NYC self defense classes, via Yahoo. Learning how to defend yourself and, better yet, staying alert and hopefully out of dangerous situations is a good idea for both women AND men.

Two years ago I took an amazing self defense class called Impact.212.255.0505. The classes are in Chelsea. I loved it and I felt so powerful during the time I was in the class. I highly recommend it. They focus on ways to diffuse a situation and on how to combat an attacker if he doesn't give up.

I forgot to include their web address in my first post -- it's www.prepareinc.com.

FYI something similar happened to my old roommate on mckibbin street in bushwick/"east williamsburg" about a month ago - and that's not the only incident there either. i cannot stress enough the importance of traveling in groups in that area - morgan ave. etc. - esp. if you are female.

It sounds like the same m.o. as another girl attacked in that area a couple of months ago (two thugs, vestibule push-in). As if we need more reasons to hate on Williamsburg (or faux Williamsburg, for that matter). . . .

this is so f*cked up. no one in the building heard anything for an hour and no one came or went for over an hour? must be a very remote and empty part of Williamsburg.

This happened on Saturday night

Hawthorne - it wasn't a remote area, it was on Grand Street, around 10 PM on Saturday, across the street from an art opening. There are usually more people outside at that time of night than there are during the day.

UPDATE: I saw on the news this morning (4/12) that police apprehended one of the guys--the one on the left, reportedly named José Cruz. They are still looking for the guy on the right--he goes by the name "Snipe" or something.

Jen W: what is faux williamsburg??

Faux Williamsburg is any part of Williamsburg past the graham stop on the L. Though it is often refered to as East Williamsburg, it is really Bushwick Brooklyn. Just a real estate brokers tactic to tempt people into a less desireable neiboorhood. for the record I just put down a deposit on a loft at the Morgan L stop, which is undeniably Bushwick.
