The developers of the Time Warner Center are heading north to the Bronx to develop the Bronx Terminal Market. The Related Companies have bought the dilapidated markets for a reported $40 million. At one point, the Bronx Terminal Market was the country's largest Hispanic wholesale market (according to the Times, there were over 100 tenants and 1000 employees once); now there are only 30 vegetable and fruit sellers. While the Bronx Borough President is happy, some of the current tenants are dubious. Hopefully the market will be able to retain its presence with area businesses and not become too over-priced with upgrades - although Gothamist could see some city chefs opening up a casual Bronx cafes in the market.
More about the Bronx Terminal Market from Forgotten NY.

WOW, SO NOW THAT I HAVE WORK FOR OVER NINE YEARS AT THIS PLACE, YOU RICH GUYS WEARING YOUR SUITS AND TIES ARE GOING TO TAKE MY FAMILY PLATE FROM THEIR TABLE. I HOPE YOU FEEL PROUD OF WHAT YOUR PLANS ARE LETS HOPE I DON'T HAVE TO BECOME ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT THE GOVERMENT HAS TO SUPPORT FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE JUST CAUSE YOU PEOPLE WITH MONEY GET MORE GREEDY EVERY DAY.
The opening of the terminal market will strengthen the local economy and provide for many families. These types of investments are needed in the area. Hopefully a new luxury hotel will come into the area. With the area on the rise, this project will only compliment the nearly abandoned facility and surrounding area.
With more upper and middle class settling in the area the market will prosper if done in good taste.
Where can I continue to by African products (Gari, Elubo, Yams, etc) at reasonable prices? Please let me know where all the sellers moved to, provide addresses and phone numbers.
