Statue of Liberty to Re-Open This Summer

2004_01_statue.jpg

It looks like the Statue of Liberty, which has been closed since September 11, 2001, will reopen later this summer. Mayor Bloomberg and government officials will make a formal announcement that most of the funding necessary has been raised (to improve security on Liberty Island) later today, but Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton did the morning talk show circuit, explaining visitors will be screened and be able to make reservations when they visit the Statue. This is great news, not just because the Statue of Liberty is beautiful and has some great views of the city, but because the poor tourists in Battery Park City will stop getting bilked by hucksters selling tickets to "go to the Statue of Liberty" when it's just Ellis Island.

The Daily News also reports that Mayor Bloomberg donated $100,000 out of his billionaire pockets to the fund to reopen the Statue of Liberty - great - but then noted some of his other donations: $6 million to the Education Department's Leadership Academy to help train city principals and $5 million to bring the Republican National Convention the NY. Of course, the ideal timing for the Bush White House is for the Statue of Liberty to open in time for the convention, but Secretary Norton was vague about timing.

I predict a Bush photo op much like the one with Mount Rushmore (only *slightly* less humorous).

oh gawd. so is he going to just do a Lower Manhattan tour? Lay down the Freedom Tower cornerstone, open the Statue and get the hell back to Midtown to surround himself with his Replubican friends who aren't from NYC.
