Pizza Road (Well, Subway) Trip Alert

Totonno's pizza by Slice NY

The New Yorker's profile of George Giove, the "twenty-nine-year-old journeyman pizzaiolo" who competes in "freestyle pizza throwing" for the U.S. Pizza Team made us hungry for some pizza today. So we checked out NY magazine's Best Pizza of NY and noticed that while there are some nearby Manhattan options, Gothamist really just wants some of the "blistered crust, the sweet mozzarella ooze, the dabs of sauce all coalesce into a work of art" of Totonno's, which was honored with Best Old School Pie. Unfortunately, Totonno's is in Coney Island. Fortunately, the Slice Pizza Club is going to Totonno's and will ride the Cyclone this Sunday.

And here's a look at the acrobatic team of the USPT. You can also see a movie of last year's competition (.mov - kind of large), and it's truly something else.

And, finally, in more ridiculous food news, Macy's is going to test-market Cosi sandwich shops in their department stores, so people can eat within the confines of Macy's - without sneaking to the food court. Cosi is pretty good, but Gothamist will never be able to have another sandwich made out of Cosi's signature Pizza Romano flat bread again - we were forcefed Cosi sandwiches by an early employer who didn't want us to leave the office during lunch.

  • Mr. Slope Pizza

Also, if you're in Brooklyn Heights, Fascati Pizza on Henry Street is simple and great. And quite possibly the last truly old school Pizza place in Brooklyn.

  • actually Jen W., if you head on over to slice, they had a post about pizza in park slope. really, slice is a great resource - well, at least i think so.

  • Mr. Slope Pizza

If you like Joe's Pizza on Bleeker Street in Manhattan, you'll like Joe's Pizza on 7th Avenue across from Key Food in Park Slope. The place used to be Big Pizza Cafe, but is still quite good. Roma Pizza on 7th Avenue near Union Street has great stuff too. Much better than that Smiling Pizza Grease Hole on 9th Street.

  • Park Slope pizza is generally nondescript. The "Best of the Worst", IMHO, can be found at Tony's on 5th, across from Key Foods. I haven't tried La Villa on 5th and 1st, though. It's supposed to be pretty good.

The dearth of good slices may soon be rectified -- there is a brick-oven place opening on Flatbush called Franny's. And over in Prospect Heights, rumor has it that a place will be opened on Vanderbilt, by the owner of Aliseo.

Is there any good pizza in Park Slope? (Smiling & Pizza Plus are rubbery and bland, Fava is . . . interesting. Somewhere on 5th, maybe?) Totonno's delivery is about the only thing I miss about living on the UES.

  • one to try:

pizza and calzone on union st. (between hicks and columbia) in brooklyn.

    ohhh boy. that sauce!

  • adamn, i'm there. can't speak for jen or jake though.

and my brooklyn centricness is only recent, for i grew up in manny.

  • Aww, Don't let Coney Island Baby get to you, Ms. Chung. Neptune Avenue IS a bit of a trek. But, hey: If you've still got a hankerin' for Totonno's by Sunday, we'd be glad to see you—and Jake and Tien—haul your Manhattan-centric asses out to the BK for the afternoon. (Oh, wait—Tien is Brooklyn-centric; but the sentiment's the same nonetheless.)

  • Pizza Club?

When do I get to join a burrito club? I am still hurting for some Cotija's since moving from California last summer.

  • Coney Island Baby

"I wanted Totonno's NOW so going to Coney Island from midtown Manhattan IS a big trip."

Sorry the world cannot change to suit your needs.

  • Jen

I wanted Totonno's NOW so going to Coney Island from midtown Manhattan IS a big trip.

  • Coney Island Baby

"Unfortunately, Totonno's is in Coney Island."

Only if your truly so Manhattan-centric you cannot realize that it's not as big a trip as you make it out to be.

It's a lot easier to get out to Totonno's than half the hipster loft parties in Williamsburg.

  • Jen W

There's a Totonno's on the Upper East Side (82nd-ish and 2nd) if you can't be bothered to schlepp all the way out to Coney Island. It's almost as good as the CI one, but is run more like a real restaurant (regular hours and more menu items). Either way, the Bianca is divine.

  • ooh, that's good, maybe there will be less people!

  • Thanks for mentioning Slice's upcoming Coney trip, Jen. But it's on Sunday*, not Saturday! I don't want anyone heading out there only to meet a shuttered coaster.

*A bit of trivia: The Cyclone always opens on Palm Sunday each year.
