I am sorry but I thought the dress was very pretty. I don't expect lady actors to be wearing everything we wear on a daily basis - they are more like trendsetters and give us ideas. Miss Parker was portraying just that - ways in which dresses can be fun. And that was a totally 50s dress that cried out that in this day and age we have lost perhaps the courage to wear something that is not practical or just plain sexy. And by the way, teachers in Europe earn much less than that - so I guess my colleagues in the US can relax a bit; there's always somebody worse off than us in the world!

okay, I came across this site looking specifically for this dress so I can model a wedding dress after it. I love it! You're all crazy! (though I do tend to agree that I wouldn't be caught dead in most of what Carrie wore on the show)

39 k sounds really good until you stand have to stand in front of a classroom of 7th graders yelling sexual advances and threatening a walk out.

Sorry, but I can't understand why someone would want to a buy an 80K dress that's not even practical. The dry cleaning must be atrocious.

ohhhh, i totally love that dress.
go ahead and make fun of me, but i thought i'd speak up for the non-vocal [at least here] supporters of artfully decaying ruffles. seriously, so so lovely.

reminds me of the equally tripe-like dress worn by julianne moore in that great entertainment weekly photo of her holding her baby. can't find a link to it, but i believe it was also alexander mcqueen.

During the HBO special which aired before the S&TC finale, they showed a behind-the-scenes clip of SJP in that dress, carefully climbing onto the bed, and all her dress wranglers artfully arranging it for the shot. When it comes to Carrie's wardrobe, it was already hard to maintain suspension of disbelief whilst watching S&TC. Now I learn she can't even wear the clothes realistically. Not only could Carrie not afford her wardrobe, she needs handlers to help her wear it! Until that moment, I thought the only special effect on S&TC was Kim Catrall's cleavage...

Actually, I meant to suggest that it was a high number. My friends definitely don't make that much, and they teach in public schools in the Bronx.

Anyway, $39K sounds really good to me, who works in publishing and don't make jack.

I read that $39K is the starting salary for many NYC teachers. And while that seems low for some, that's certainly on par with other early-stage private sector jobs that aren't banking/finance/consulting.

Specific teachers aside, I think teachers, especially city teachers, are generally underpaid for the work they do.

I have to agree with your error on teacher salaries. A neighbor who was a teacher was complaining to me in 2003 that her retirement pay was going to be $55,000/year. I always thought I knew more about the subject she taught than she did & I'm not a teacher. I'm barely earning a little more than her retirement pay and I'm in the private sector with an advanced degree.

I was at Silvercup, where they shot SATC, and they were selling off props and clothes of all kinds, before the big sample sale. Tampon boxes, pots and pans, Big's shirts, carpets, couches, you name it. My friend bought towels with "McD" embroidered on them - $1 from the shortlived house of York-McDougall.

Gothamist was working off the purported NYC teacher wage from friends who did the Fellowship program.

And at this point, with Gothamist, we're still in the red. Freaking server costs!

I never liked anything Carrie ever wore, never ever. The clashing prints, colors and textures mixed-and-matched were all vile to me.

There, I said it.
