When asked about ending the schools' social promotion plan for third graders, Mayor Bloomberg said, "Yes, they may cry a little bit. But children in the third grade cry a lot, and it's part of the growing-up process. They have to learn that they've got to do the work. And they've got to learn if they don't have the skills, people shouldn't walk away from them and society should work with them." The Daily News also has some interesting statistics, like 36% of ninth graders and 43% of sophomores repeated their grades last year.
Other education news: The good - more kids are passing the Regents exams. The bad - the results show a gap between white and minority children. The Times reports that Chancellor Klein finds the news "troubling" and will use it as why social promotions had to end.

The Daily News also reveals that one of Mayor Bloomberg's last-minute Education Policy Panel appointees owns a lingerie shop in Staten Island. Yes, Staten Island - they wear lingerie there apparently! Shocking!

Lies. I Never cried during the 3rd Grade.
The percentage of students being held back is unacceptable, but its better then letting them go ahead to higher grades unprepared. Its a Start, but it shouldnt have to take 2 years for any child to get through one grade. They have a long Way to go.
I hated the Regents when I had to take it, but I took the last one before they made it much harder, especially the English Regents. They threw in the new test before students were ready for it and they failed in droves. So its good to see more passing it. The Race gap is still a troubling reminder of the deeper problems in the system.
Staten Island Women wear Lingerie??? I guess they shouldnt have to break off from the city after all.
If you've ever had the misfortune of riding the subway at 3PM when school lets out you might have an idea why so many kids are left back. Scary!
Wow, 82% for Asian kids is suprisingly low. Does this include recent immigrants in ESL?
Before the game is over, I take back what I said about NYC ballers yesterday. Manhattan is KILLING Florida.
3PM is awful- even if I am freaking out, falling asleep and or drunk at work I will never leave until 4 to avoid those monsters (I would go cute and say "little" - but some of them are not). Freakin nightmare. Bring back corporal punishment-or involved parents I guess.
